The island nation that collapsed into sovereign default 18 months ago now drowns under 300mm of rainfall in 48 hours.

This is not weather. This is a stress test.

Cyclone Ditwah has destroyed 15,000 homes. Displaced 44,000 citizens. Severed the tea highlands that generate $1.3 billion in annual exports. The same slopes that produce the world’s finest Ceylon tea are the slopes now buried under landslides.

The mathematics are brutal: An economy running a 2.2% primary surplus under IMF supervision now faces $500 million in unplanned reconstruction. The fiscal space does not exist. The margin for error was already zero.

India deployed an aircraft carrier within 24 hours. China sent nothing.

But here is what no one is saying: A second wave approaches. Leptospirosis, the bacterial disease that follows floods in Sri Lanka, has a 5 to 14 day incubation period. December 4 through 14 will reveal whether this disaster doubles.

The death toll will exceed 200. The missing will not be found. The tea harvest is compromised. The IMF program faces its first real test.

Sri Lanka needs immediate humanitarian support: medical supplies, water purification, shelter materials, and international pressure to ensure reconstruction financing does not trigger another debt spiral.

This nation survived default. It survived political collapse. It cannot survive being forgotten.

The world watched Sri Lanka burn in 2022. The world must not look away as it drowns in 2025.
