seeing a lot of posts lately about how fanfic has ruined people's perception of canon and I just find that so reductive because there are lots of people who don't read or write fanfic who still manage to misinterpret canon. it's about internal biases, not fic.

this type of mentality is why people end up demonizing creators with complex characters with dubious or outright terrible morals. an original character is not a self insert/sona. you need a wide range of different ocs in order to tell a story, they cant all be author avatars
Btw "systemic racism" doesn't mean "lots of racists in the system". It means that even if there were *zero* "racists" present, the system would still disproportionately harm people of certain races. It's baffling that lots of educated folks don't understand this concept.
