Last night #TEDx, Dr. Philipp Bayer revealed how he's using shadow profiles - data collected without explicit consent - similar to social media, to locate fish in the ocean. By analyzing bacterial, viral, and other #eDNA data, he's revolutionizing marine biology! 🌊🐟 @minderoo
Check out this amazing behind the scenes video of true, novel discovery at work. Tim Bennett in situ at 142 meters collecting a new species of Chromis in Flora Reef, filmed by Ghislain Bardout of @UnderThePole during our recent mesophotic expedition to the Coral Sea.
Conservation genetics legend, Fred Allendorf is visiting Australia in September and will give a version of his popular 3 day courses in Perth. EOI: https://t.co/aVyt8gVoUH
Serranocirrhitus latus, the Sunburst Anthias, is the sole member of this unusual genus. It lives in loose groups, often swimming upside down in caves and ledges. While this is not a true mesophotic species, they are commonest in the upper mesophotic, between 30 to 60 m.
Wrapping up an extraordinary scientific mission off the Great Barrier Reef with an international team of scientists and divers. 7 dives reaching 120-150 meters! The mission? Cataloging new fish species in the mesophotic zone and documenting coral bleaching 🌊🔍#GreatBarrierReef
Just got back from a fantastic trip to the Coral Sea and GBR with the @FishGuyKai@austmus! Saw some truly amazing fish and took fantastic photos, including of this stunning Centropyge colini at about 100m depth. Oh, and did I mention new species? More soon! #MesophoticDownUnder
