I used to be in Morningside around his time. It was often said that he was the best Prime Minister we never had. I’ve always believed this but the events of the last 6 years or so have me wondering if underneath it all he might just have been like the rest of them. Abusable. Weaknesses identified and exploited. And it’s taken me longer than many to realise the absolute failure and illusion that is Politics.

The newer saying is that you’re not going to vote your way out of this. Entirely correct- the formula to merge the evil of the powerful with the greed and weaknesses of the political class and the power of mass media has been perfected. They can do anything to us now- and anything they’ve not done yet is because it isn’t in their own interests.

The Labour Party of old is long gone, and we can only guess at how long it truly existed. Party politics is meaningless now, the names and personnel irrelevant. We’re truly on our own, free range slaves to the system, and dependant on the whim of stable psychopaths. This is what we’ve come to. Please prepare accordingly and be ready to push back appropriately- or settle for the cage designed for you.

The lesson is- don’t give any human being any amount of genuine power. And don’t give what little power you possess individually away to those who may or may not mean well, but end up on the same strings anyway.

So they licensed them. The pistores (the bakers) received legal privileges, guaranteed grain supplies, even exemptions from certain public duties. Generous, no?

The price came due fast. Membership turned hereditary. Your father baked bread for the annona, so you would bake bread for the annona, and your son after you. The collegium became a caste. Diocletian's Edict on Maximum Prices in 301 AD then fixed what you could charge, which meant you produced at a loss or you didn't produce at all. Bakers fled their ovens. Shippers abandoned their vessels. The emperors responded by chaining men to their trades by law.

Watch the mechanism, because it repeats across every century. The state grants a privilege. The privilege comes with a leash. The leash tightens until the "beneficiary" is a serf holding a charter.

Free market thinkers have a name for the exchange the emperors offered: protection from competition in return for obedience. The baker who once set his own prices and hired whom he pleased now answered to a prefect. His guild, born to serve him, now served Rome.

The bread got worse.

The ever-expanding network of Flock and other AI-powered surveillance cameras is not being rolled out to "reduce crime" or "keep you safe". That's just the sales pitch.

Today it's violent criminals and stolen vehicles. Tomorrow it's whistleblowers, investigative journalists, peaceful protesters and government critics. The uses of mass surveillance infrastructure never remain limited to the justifications used to install it.

Once millions of these cameras have been merged into a vast centralised surveillance grid, the authorities no longer need to physically follow you. They can simply enter your registration number and reconstruct a detailed map of your life from a database.

AI-powered surveillance cameras are not making communities safer. They are building a digital trail of everyone's movements—one licence plate at a time.

Because a population that can move freely and anonymously is difficult to control. A population whose every journey can be retrieved and retraced at will is not.

Frédéric Bastiat captured the essence of modern politics in a single sentence:

“The State is that great fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else.”

Once the state becomes the primary mechanism for distributing resources, politics stops being about protecting rights or creating the conditions for voluntary cooperation. It becomes a contest in which every group attempts to extract wealth from others through taxation, subsidies, regulation and welfare.

Farmers demand agricultural subsidies. Pensioners demand higher benefits. Students demand free tuition. Corporations demand bailouts and protection from competition. Each group frames its demands as a matter of justice or necessity, while ignoring that the money must come from someone else’s labour and property.

This creates a deeply corrosive dynamic. Instead of producing value through trade and innovation, people invest time and resources in political activity designed to redistribute existing wealth. The result is not greater prosperity, but higher taxes, expanding bureaucracy and a culture of dependency, victimhood and resentment.

The state transforms society into a zero-sum game. When everyone is encouraged to view government as a source of unearned benefits, the moral and practical foundations of a free society are steadily undermined. The fiction eventually collapses under the weight of its own contradictions.

My name is Kyrylo Shevchenko. I am the former Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

A horrifying assassination attempt on a Ukrainian businessman in Monaco has shocked the world. His companion had both legs blown off in the explosion, while he and his son were hospitalized.

But the story has an even darker continuation: the bomb was planted by a Ukrainian woman who was receiving payments from an officer of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate under the Ministry of Defense, known as HUR. Upon her return to Ukraine on July 1, that same officer shot her in the head. The entire case was "investigated" and closed in just a few days.

Watching this unfold like a scene from a mafia thriller, I am reminded of the direct threats I myself have received from Ukrainian security services, including kidnapping warnings. It is becoming clear that Zelensky's regime is prepared to use any means against its opponents.

Behind this system stands not only Zelensky himself, but also the man long known as the "grey cardinal" of his office — Andriy Yermak. Until recently nearly all-powerful, controlling appointments across ministries, security agencies, and the military, Yermak formally resigned in late November 2025 amid the corruption scandal surrounding Energoatom, and later became a suspect in a money-laundering case. But the system he built — as Ukrainian lawmakers themselves have acknowledged — did not disappear along with his departure from office.

This case raises serious questions: How did a woman wanted by Interpol cross into Ukraine without assistance from the security services? And how was such a high-profile investigation completed in a matter of days? For comparison, the legendary Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Gongadze was murdered in 2000, and the investigation still has not named those responsible.

Yet here, the intelligence officer quickly confesses, claims he acted alone, and says his leadership knew nothing.

This is convenient. The main witness and perpetrator is now dead and cannot speak.

I do not own a major, attractive business, but as Governor of the National Bank, I crossed a line: I refused to allow the money printing that would have hurt Ukraine in 2022, and I blocked a sponsorship scheme linked to Zelensky's inner circle. For that, I now face a fabricated criminal case in both Ukraine and Austria.

I am grateful to Austria, where I am currently located, for protecting me from threats by Ukrainian security services.

I appeal to the civilized world and to Europe: by continuing to turn a blind eye to what is happening, you are condemning other Ukrainians to fear, persecution, and — God forbid — elimination at the hands of Zelensky's regime. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme with one feature Bernie Madoff never had: the federal government will send armed men to your home if you refuse to participate.

Every working American pays 12.4% of wages into a system that holds zero assets on their behalf. The Social Security Trust Fund owns Treasury IOUs, meaning the government owes money to itself. When you pay in today, Congress spends that money immediately on current retirees and general expenditures. Your "account" is a political promise, enforced by statute, backed by nothing except the Treasury's capacity to tax future workers. Charles Ponzi ran the same structure in 1920 and went to federal prison for it. The difference is purely jurisdictional.

Free market economists succintly explained how this unravels. A pay-as-you-go system requires an expanding base of workers to fund a growing pool of retirees. In 1950, 16 workers supported each Social Security beneficiary. By 2024, that ratio sat at 2.7 workers per beneficiary, and the Social Security Administration's own actuaries project the combined trust funds reach insolvency by 2033. At that point, the law mandates automatic benefit cuts of roughly 21%. The math is not ambiguous. The program has been consuming its own structural foundation for decades.

You were never given a choice. No opt-out exists. Attempt to withhold your payroll tax and the IRS assesses penalties, levies your bank account, and ultimately prosecutes you. The moral weight of that coercion tends to disappear beneath softer language about "contributions" and "entitlements," but the underlying mechanism is identical to any other government extraction: comply or face force. Calling the payroll tax a contribution is calling a mugging a voluntary wealth transfer.

The cruelest part is what the coercion actually costs you. A 25-year-old earning $60,000 today who redirected their 12.4% payroll tax into a simple index fund over a 40-year career would retire with approximately $1.4 million in real assets, not a political promise subject to congressional revision every budget cycle. Instead, Congress gets the capital, allocates it to current political priorities, and hands you a benefit formula that the same Congress retains the legal authority to cut at any time. The Supreme Court confirmed in Fleming v. Nestor (1960) that you hold no contractual right to Social Security benefits whatsoever.

They built a mandatory retirement system where you own nothing, control nothing, and are protected by nothing except the goodwill of the people spending your money.
