A great pleasure to thank Alejandro Sánchez (Advisory Centre on WTO Law, Geneva) for insightful review of book by Brink and Orden “Agricultural Domestic Support under the WTO: Experience and Prospects”. Review at FirstView of the World Trade Review at https://t.co/iyLy5DP2XK
Deeply humbled, immensely honored, immeasurably proud (and surprised). Why? At its conference in New Delhi this week the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) named me an Honorary Life Member. This is the IAAE’s highest honour. https://t.co/AjhjjBBalb
Very pleased to thank Prof. A. Ford Ramsey for well-informed review of book by Brink and Orden “Agricultural Domestic Support Under the WTO: Experience and Prospects”. Review in Cato Institute’s journal “Regulation”, Summer 2024 (downloadable) at https://t.co/V8cMbnxao7
Very strong piece by @TimothyDSnyder.
"Strongman rule is a fantasy. Essential to it is the idea that a strongman will be your strongman. He won't. The whole point is that the strongman owes us nothing. We get abused and we get used to it."

The World Trade Organization’s Ministerial Conference #MC13 starts on Monday.
One of the most difficult issues facing the #WTO ministers? Simply put: “PSH” is the biggest controversy in the WTO agriculture talks
But it doesn’t mean what people think

Appreciated WTO invitation to talk about domestic support book earlier today 5 December. Good turnout, well informed commentators with high level questions, engaged audience participants. Plus: WTO Library is handsome locale for this event, not the usual meeting room. Thanks WTO!

Did you miss the IISD-IFPRI webinars on WTO Agriculture Negotiations and Sustainable Development last week? Now you can watch online the three webinars on Domestic Support, Public Stockholding for Food Security Purposes (PSH) and Export Restrictions by @IISD_AG and @IFPRI.
This is misleading.
No one's against public stockholding.
They have a problem with exceeding domestic support limits when buying large amounts into stocks at supported prices.
But everyone including the US has agreed on no legal challenge.
So the Q is what replaces it?

Given that #agriculture covers most habitable land, monitoring #biodiversity on agricultural land is essential to progress towards the @UNBiodiversity objectives. Our new paper defines principles for an @OECD farmland habitat biodiversity indicator. See https://t.co/Lnx9W5QpFC
The authors of this article, Orden & @Larsbrinkcanada , suggest a welcome change to calculating the formula that would be acceptable to both parties & end this ongoing impasse
