My dad Mark passed away early Wednesday morning after a long journey with cancer. Connecting with others about the natural world through Twitter brought him a lot of joy in the last years of his life. Thank you all for providing that community for him. -@ZooTeacherAnne

The Eastern Band-winged Hoverfly is kind of photogenic if you can get the focus. It's a steady hoverer at about eye-level and seems to hover in light beams shining through dense foliage.

@TroyDeclan @BirdIzLife Just read on https://t.co/fUWfqFxNeI that PABU males get their adult colors their second fall except for 40% of males that can be distinguished from females earlier by their blue heads and song. They are sexually mature and attempt to breed.

This is the yellowest male Painted Bunting that I have ever seen. I scrolled a lot of iNaturalist and Macaulay Lab images and didn't find any quite like it. It was singing like an adult this morning.

@MargueriteTurl2 @Bertonemyia I really like the claws on these flying grizzlies.

@WWBugs Yes, it's one of the common paper wasps around here, maybe Polistes exclamans.
