So here's Laphria aurea, an absolute UNIT of a robberfly, lurking in ambush for a sleepy bee hoping to snooze in a Serapias carica #orchid in Rhodes. Also, one such bee.
It’s #WorldRobberFlyDay! These amazing predatory flies are what first pulled me into the world of entomology. Today’s a great chance to shine a light on the incredible robber fly diversity across the Andes—there are still many taxa waiting to be described...

#Robberflies (Family #Assilidae) are marvelous flying #predators. With distinctive (to my ear!) buzzing, I can often tell when they are near. This mating pair posed for me in S. Illinois on a memorable trip. They love the camera!
My contribution to #WorldRobberflyDay is a mating pair of the Hornet Robberfly. Check out that talon in the eye of the female. Also, a favourite prey seems to be Grasshoppers here on the South Downs. @SxBRC @sdnpa @SussexWildlife
