Some things to remember about conservatives:

Psychologically, the whole thing can probably be reduced to an overblown fear and disgust reaction, the response of limited minds to the chaos, uncertainty, and diversity of existence. There is sadism in the mix too, though that is hardly unique to conservatives. Any ideology or political strain driven primarily by these impulses is, in essence, conservative, whatever label it wears at the moment.

Their answer to this fear and disgust is the assertion of hierarchy, particularly the personalist, quasi-abusive variety they valorize in the army, the mob, business, and similar institutions. These require incessant mythmaking because actually living inside them is deeply unpleasant for nearly everyone. They are mechanisms for shit flowing downhill, and almost everyone is downhill. Even those at the top are corrupted by the system and often come to despise those who depend on them as a kind of psychological defense against what they impose.

Fear and disgust are so essential to the worldview that reality alone will not sustain them. Conservatives retreat into a fantasy world where enemies loom impossibly large, doing cartoonishly evil things; where the future is always worse, society teeters on the verge of collapse, and endless preparation is necessary. Their chronic inability to feel secure or punish those who disgust them curdles into frustration, then into rage, a rage easily exploited.
