One thing I don’t understand about travel culture in America is that many seem totally reticent to visit the heartland of our own country.

I regularly meet people who’ve been to Prague, Paris, Berlin, London, Costa Rica, even Tokyo — often multiple times — but they’ve never once thought to visit any of America’s so-called “flyover country.” In fact, quite a few even sneer at the idea of making a trip to any such place.

Why? Some will say these places are “boring,” but they haven’t been — so how could they know that? It reads like self-hate to me.

Even if you live in Midtown, Malibu, Boston, whatever — the heartland is you. It’s in your bones, because you’re an American. Go see it!
