The most depressing thing about being a woodworker today is that clients will literally email me pictures of ikea furniture and ask if I can please make them one, despite the fact that I can do this:
@jessesingal I even went so far as to use no overhead lights, only candles, for an hour before bed (probably not necessary, I think the phones / computers/ tv are the problem) and voila! Insomnia went away virtually overnight
@jessesingal This isn’t your typical advice but I had horrible insomnia as well, and after reading up on melatonin and circadian biology I started getting 30 min of morning sun within 2 hours of waking, and no blue light after sunset (I lock up my phone in a kSafe to avoid temptation)
This is just to say
I have eaten
the peach
that was on
the counter
and which
you were probably
saving
for the kids
Forgive me
it was delicious
so sweet
and so cold
As someone who grew up as an evangelical pastor’s kid, I can confirm the trauma is real, and came, for me, from the cognitive dissonance of wanting so badly to be loved but feeling like it was impossible since my core was full of rot
Went on a date last night with a guy who ranted about the demise of traditional masculinity and referenced a lot of esoteric RW Twitter and then at the end made me split the bill? Is this a thing? (Note he already asked me out again so this was not to signal disinterest??)
Being an evangelical kid your parents make you rehearse great boundaries- no I don’t drink, thanks. No, I cannot date you. Sorry, my bedtime is 9:00. No, I can’t listen to that music from Satan. Can’t say I ever used them as a teen but in my 30s they’re 👌🏻
I used to share this lament, and was hard on myself for not reading anymore. Now, I read several hours per day. All I did was buy a safe with a timer and put my phone in it from 7pm-7am. Oh I started playing piano again too.
@lionel_trolling “fully commodified mass culture is actually a liberating field of meaning-making” is absolutely the worst cultural criticism trend of the past 50 years
If you're a materialist, ride that hard to it's end. Don't believe in freedom or soul? Don't believe things have meaning? Keep going. Once you evacuate the possibility of anything "subjective", I'll see you on the other side in a world of gods, angels, ritual and worship.
I understand the perspective of someone who is made uncomfortable by conservative ideas and so resorts to psychologically shallow generalisations about the people who hold them as a kind of rationalisation... because I used to be that person
Anne of Green Gables gets criticized a lot for being saccharine but you know what? I *would* like to fall asleep in an apple blossom. I *am* glad to live in a world with Octobers. it *is* a splendid world and I’m very glad to be alive in it.
