Yesterday was my last day in the office w/ @LauraDaray. For the last 5 years I’ve been at GSSI you’ve been the most supportive & caring colleague and friend. I’ll miss you tons and can’t wait til our paths cross again! You’ll always be apart of the #GSSIfam ❤️
Our chapter on “Common Misconceptions in Classic and Exertional Heat Stroke” among many other hot topics. Congrats @DrJPeriard and @ephysiol for organizing such a nice collection of heat related issues https://t.co/kUPhO0COF1
#Blood biomarkers CAN be used for screening and monitoring. Biomarker selected depends on needs analysis (Vit D, iron status, nutrition markers, energy status), but note longitudinal statistical approaches recommended @pedlarcr#bloodtesting#GSSIXP
Blood biomarker results may be as you’d expect during certain points in season-but having objective info to show an athlete can help w/ buy in to implement necessary recovery strategies.
Showing a player they aren’t recovering >> telling a player they aren’t recovering #GSSIXP
If using #blood biomarkers, must consider collecting good quality #data: control for exercise, consider posture, time of day, hydration, fasting, order of the draws, psychological stresses, and more @pedlarcr#bloodtesting#GSSIXP
Interesting article on tailoring monitoring in athletes - just b/c a measurement is in the reference range does not means it's normal for the athlete. Monitoring & finding norms for the athlete may be more indicative of health & recovery in-season https://t.co/4LHyC3dsYy #GSSIXP
Why test #blood biomarkers?
o To identify #fatigue (e.g., functional overreaching vs non)
o To identify nutritional deficiency or excess
o To assess training or recovery interventions
BUT note many limitations and challenges with blood testing.

Genes explain a little but environment explains a lot more. Asian women with the breast cancer gene have 5x the breast cancer risk when living in America vs. Asian women with this gene living in their native country. #GSSIXP
"Biological talent is real" says @DrMJoyner "BUT..." determining the genetic influence has proven difficult to unsuccessful. Genetic testing in #athletes to predict athletic potential = ineffective @DrMJoyner #genetics#genes#DNA#athleteperformance#GSSIXP
The afternoon of our 2019 #GSSIXP Meeting features a special practitioner discussion, so for Day 2, I'd like to say THANK YOU to @MaryJaneDeSouz1 & @Sale_ExNut for top notch presentations #sportsnutrition#sportsscience#athletehealth
As you'd expect, #calcium is always important for #bonehealth. For athletes, calcium intake should be adequate but perhaps a little more than 800 mg/d (1000-1500 mg) @Sale_ExNut #bone#athletehealth#GSSIXP
