I am struggling a bit to provide proper scaffolding with a language-dense lesson on writing Algebraic Expression. There is a word wall, but are there any favorites approaches to translating english phrases to algebraic phrases? #iteachmath @normabgordon #LUMathMethods
Took me awhile to try this MathLibs exercise. Made me realize some of my own beliefs! https://t.co/h3yHraYtS2 #LUMathMethods @normabgordon #iteachmath@benjamindickman
Introducing Algebraic Equations this week and a student asked if 5x was an algebraic expression was 5 an AE too? What are the best questions to ask so that the student could arrive at the answer? Trying to focus on allowing the productive struggle. #iteachmath#LUMathMethods
Saw a piece detailing a college prep HS in LA that receives no state or federal funding. The part that caught my attention was a math trig class with no teacher. https://t.co/q3qYiisvB0 at 2:00. All students go to college. #LUMathMethods#iteachmath
@GoldinMath So, this is really interesting and involves social science research too. How much does socialization and cultural expectations impact how each gender responds to highly competitive academics? #LUMathMethods
@GoldinMath In my school, class sizes is no more than 24 students. Groups of 4 are selected at random (with the exception of known issues) and are rotated after every unit test (usually). Groups of 4 are used so that there are shoulder partners as well as table group. #LUMathMethods
This incredible interview with Princeton maths professor and Fields medal winner. If you can only listen to first few mins it is still worth it - Professor Manjul Bhargava https://t.co/QlVRask4Rg via @YouTube
Saw the HBO documentary "Class Divide" this week. Very interesting commentary on social and educational inequalities in the Chelsea neighborhood in NYC. Worth your time. #LUMathMethods
@smathclass As a parent of a child just leaving middle school, I agree wholeheartedly with this educator/parent's approach and I would argue the approach should begin as kids enter school. Emphasis should be on effort and kindness. I sent notes with my kids - Try your best and be kind!
@DebMorrisroe@joboaler And the University of Chicago has dropped them (and the ACT) as a requirement for admission this year. The first (of hopefully more) elite schools to do this.
@MathWithMissS My school also sponsors a "homework club" that each grade level teacher holds one day a week for 45 minutes. Students who participated in after school activities are required to attend. The math teachers often used the time for extra help. It doesn't catch all students, but helps
@MathWithMissS One of my EFE teachers would speak to struggling students separately and offer to have a "working" lunch with them. Sometimes this was one-on-one (with a para in the room as well) or a small group of students that he knew worked well together. He had great success with it.
Just read Michelle Russell's article on why all new teachers should use Twitter. The immediate supportive response to almost any request is amazing! @middleweb
