Watch closely, this isn’t happening by accident.
Doug Ford is following the same playbook we’re seeing elsewhere. Step by step, it mirrors what Danielle Smith is doing in Alberta and what the U.S. system has normalized for years.
This is how it starts: Underfund public healthcare → create frustration → introduce “alternatives” → normalize private, for-profit care → bring in insurance-driven models.
And let’s be clear the capitalist private insurance companies have been eyeing Canada for decades.
There’s been pressure going back to the Harper era to open that door.
Because once it opens, it doesn’t close.
Universal healthcare isn’t just a system it’s a safeguard. And if people don’t pay attention now, we risk waking up to something very different.
This isn’t fear-mongering. It’s a pattern.
And patterns matter.
Let me explain something. Our provinces receive billions of dollars of transfers from the Feds to cover healthcare costs. When 75% of hospitals are running deficits, this is because the funding is not being properly directed to the hospitals. The Province is solely at fault here.
You’re witnessing the defunding of public healthcare for private health. Please note that private healthcare also uses public funds so these provincial governments are double-dipping in public funds to finance a system many people can never access
"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again."
Whether this is raving lunacy, deliberate hyperbole, depraved strategy or unabashed criminality, this is beyond war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is, essentially, a threat to commit genocide.
@MarkJCarney & @AnitaAnandMP, Canada must react. And must push every world leader to do so as well. We do not know whether these will remain chilling words or are a terrifying harbinger of what may be or even is to come. Neither can be allowed to stand.
This is not about taking the world as it is. This is about standing up for the most basic principles of humanity.

Minimum wage is going up today across Atlantic Canada—but it still falls short of a true living wage. Workers deserve more than the bare minimum. Unifor will continue to fight for fair wages, dignity, and a better future for all.
