The film 'Christmas Karma' by 'Bend it Like Beckham' director Gurinder Chadha last week got slated in the UK national press. Absolutely slated. The Daily Telegraph gave it zero stars. The Guardian hated it. I couldn't understand why as Chadha is a talented director. Luckily Asian Culture Vulture gave it a positive review which persuaded me to go and see it - and I am so glad I did! This is one of those Indian-English crossover films, which, I for one, love. This will appeal to Brits like me with an interest in India and British Indians and anyone with some kind of heritage or interest in India. Please ignore the bad reviews. They remind me of how my views on film never align with the film critics - ever. Generally-speaking if they give a film a five star review, I hate it. I don't tend to like Oscar-winning movies. The movies I like are the ones that often don't even get reviewed - I stumble across them and love them. This film's lead actor is Kunal Nayyar who is superb at playing Scrooge - a very talented actor indeed. It also features Boy George and there is lots of dancing and singing Bollywood style including bhangra by the fabulous Malkit Singh. The UK reviews have almost killed this film in its first week so do go and see it and don't let the UK press reviews destroy this film. You can see so much creativity and work has gone into the movie. Like Chadha's previous films, it covers the British Indian experience in the UK. Go see it and tell me what you think. It will get you into the Christmas spirit......(unless you are Scrooge.)
