Proposal 6 would move New York City elections to the same year as presidential elections once state law allows it — a change that could double voter turnout in city elections. Double! We can do this!
Should New York City elections fall on even years? Some say nationalizing local elections is bad for them. Laura Tamman argues that driving turnout higher so that mayors have something closer to a true mandate is absolutely worth any downside. https://t.co/Iucgo44Tw4
Eric Adams' Charter Revision Commission (which insists it's alive even though Mamdani ordered it disbanded) just ended its 2nd hearing, held in a Brooklyn church's basement gym.
Only 1 person showed up to testify (she asked mostly about how to get in touch with Mamdani's team).
@emilykmay What offensive or unhelpful things did well meaning family members and friends say as you were going through the divorce? I like to read a dos and don’ts piece re how to best support (or at least not amplify pain) a friend or family member through that transition.
Weirdly, I was talking to someone about Belle Burden yesterday, before the New Yorker leveled the financial claims in her memoir this morning. Suspect now that the dam has broken we’ll hear the real story, and Belle will seem far less saintly than she has been allowed to pretend.
Late to this discourse but this piece doesn't change my perception of Strangers at all. She doesn't pretend not to be very rich and privileged. The emotional impact of the divorce stuff isn't bc she'll literally be destitute, it's bc the guy behaves like a psycho
I had the same reaction. Hey @NewYorker, WTF? It does not seem like Jessica Winter and whoever edited this piece actually read Burden’s book - they just read the coverage. And whatever email her ex husband’s PR team sent them.
Ran into a paediatric colleague the other day and we were both stunned by how few cases of RSV that were admitted this winter season. This is a bug that used to fill wards with infants struggling to breathe, all thanks to the new RSV vaccine.
Science is incredible.
In addition to making streets impassable for those with disabilities, they are also impossible for strollers. Double super extra impossible for twin strollers. My lower back can tell you all about it.
A major issue with NYC snow removal is that streets are plowed by the city and sidewalks are shoveled by private property owners, while pedestrian landings/crosswalks at intersections are no one’s responsibility.
.@errollouis, on the campaign trail, I publicly criticized your magazine for failing to hire Black writers. They hired you, and you’ve spent four years using that platform to attack me, but I have remained silent.
You called me corrupt. Yet there are no gold bars, no payoffs, no stolen money, no cash in my home. Nothing. Repeat a lie long enough and some people start calling it truth.
I knew who your father was. Ed Louis. The Knapp Commission found he was part of systemic corruption in the NYPD. What you are trying to do to me was done to him. He worried about his son.
I have a son too. His name is Jordan.
Jealousy has curdled into anger and vengeance. All I can do now is pray for you.
In one of his last acts as an employee of NYC, @Fabien_Levy removed me from
the City Hall press list.
If any Democrats are looking to hire a flack who is both petty and openly hostile to the First Amendment, I think he’s probably looking for work.
