My dad had a similar experience. He owned three FMCG stores in Yaba, Tejuosho to be precise. After the war he didn't even come back to Lagos immediately because he felt he might not be welcome.

Instead he moved to PH then to Sapele and started doing imports of sewing machines (many Igbo people started itinerant sewing which led them to Okrika).

He couldn't crack the business however so his friend who had moved to Cotonou asked him to come join him. On his way there he passed through Lagos and decided to stop by his former area (two full years after the war ended) and found out that his long term neighbor a Yoruba man had kept his 3 shops running, restocking it and keeping all the records.

When he saw my dad he told him he'd been looking for a way to reach him since the war ended, even sending messages but post war craziness meant no way to find him. He totaled the money he'd managed plus the cost of buying the stores and everything added up to £9,000.

That's what my dad took plus the £6,000 he made from selling off his old business and started doing shoe and textile imports in Lome from 1973 onwards.

Many such cases.

The bank is going to be acquired in 2027 at 1.8x book by a regional that has spent four years trying to figure out how to even contact them, and which finally, in desperation, sent a letter, by mail, addressed to the CEO, who opened it, in his office, with a letter opener his father used, and who wrote on the bottom of the letter, in red pen, “OK,” and handed it to his secretary, and the deal closed six months later for $164 million in cash, and the secretary retired the following spring, and Carl bought a boat.

Around 11 p.m. last night, I got a call from someone. They said there’s an accident along Illisan, and they have called an ambulance, no response. I asked which ambulance number they called. He said 112. I told him to call the Ogun State ambulance service number: 0811 200 0033 instead.

He called back 10min later. That Ogun State ambulance had arrived at the scene, and they were on their way to OOUTH.

When there’s an accident in Ogun State, call the Ogun State hotline FIRST before dialing 112. 112 is a short code, but the response time is not the same.

112 is a federal emergency line. They’ll do a lot of rerouting before they can locate you.

The Ogun State emergency service will locate you quickly because the operators know everywhere in the state.

Who could carry on his vision, inherit his political structure and build upon his leadership foundations.

Awo did not lack for candidates. His rank and file boasted minds that were formidable in their own right - men neither lacking in oratory, nor wanting in insight, nor absent in political sagacity. The names alone commanded rooms:

Bola Ige, Lateef Jakande, Abraham Adesanya, Olabisi Onabanjo, Adekunle Ajasin....

Yet -

When the curtains closed in 1987, and Awolowo departed our realm to join the celestial company of ancestors, not one of the men he had personally groomed - despite their individual achievements, their popularity among their people, their loyalty, their devotion to the Awoism philosophy - was able to effectively succeed the Sage.

Effectively is the operative word.

Not every absence create a vacuum, Some create a void. And a man may be replaced in position, but not in presence. Not every man who departs leaves a space that the living can adequately occupy.

As it was for Awo - so it may be for Asiwaju.

His position will be replaced, but it is very unlikely we will find a man to replace his presence. And not even the Aregbesola you named - For he may have the political astuteness but he is grossly lacking in vision, strategic patience and native intelligence.

Men are not equal - not in sacrifice, not in timing, not in consequence.
