DVS is not only reducing danger here in London but also across Europe. Thanks to our work, the European Parliament has included a direct vision requirement in its new safety regulations from 2028 – saving 1000s of lives & designing out the blind spot problem at source.
To operate in London, vehicles over 12 tonnes must have a free DVS permit which assigns a star rating from 0 to 5 based on how much the driver can see directly through their cab windows. All zero-star vehicles are now banned unless a series of safety measures have been installed.
Sadly, between 2018-20 big lorries were involved in nearly 50% of fatal collisions in London involving people cycling and almost 20% involving people walking, despite HGVs only making up 3% of the overall miles driven in the capital.
