It’s crazy this even needs to be said, but if you are a westerner your ONLY job is to oppose the abuses of the western empire. Not Iran. Not China. Not Russia, Cuba or North Korea.

If you live in the US or one of its allied nations, then you live under the single most tyrannical and murderous power structure on earth, and that’s where your focus belongs. You do not have any legitimacy in squandering any of your energy and attention criticizing human rights abuses in empire-targeted nations while living under a globe-spanning empire that is fueled by a nonstop river of human blood. It is not okay for you to use your western privilege to attack the nations your own government is working to help absorb into the power structure you live under.

Whenever I say this online I’ll get some Trotskyist or anarchist babbling about the need to express “solidarity” with Iranian political prisoners or whatever, but whenever I press them on what actual, material benefit those expressions of “solidarity” bring to the people they’re meant to help, they can’t point to anything solid. Whereas I can point to some very obvious ways in which contributing to an imperial war propaganda campaign can help grease the wheels for real material actions which hurt actual Iranians.

If you’re a westerner, you have an obligation to use your voice responsibly. If you are feeding into the latest “the people in the empire-targeted nation need liberation from their evil tyrannical government” war propaganda narrative with your expressions of “solidarity” and your blind insistence on treating all bad things as equally bad, then you are using your western voice irresponsibly, and you are morally culpable for the mass slaughter you help facilitate with your recklessness.

It’s not okay to be a citizen of the western empire and act like human rights abuses in an empire-targeted nation are of equal or comparable concern to the far more egregious abuses of your own leaders and their allies. It’s also not okay to be a fully grown adult and believe the use of force in empire-targeted governments is happening separately from their targeting by the empire, as though Iran would look the way it looks today if the US and Israel had not been working to collapse and control it for generations.

Iran has only survived the latest imperial onslaught because Tehran tightly controls what happens in that country. The only reason we didn’t see Xinjiang absorbed into the western power umbrella with the help of CIA-backed separatists is because Beijing waged a sweeping crackdown on the extremist factions who’d been launching attacks in the province. The only reason North Korea has gone relatively unmolested by the western empire in recent years is because its government obtained nuclear weapons. It’s baby-brained analysis to pretend such things happen independently of the US and its allies working to take control of unabsorbed nations and force them into compliance with Washington’s capitalist world order.

The western empire therefore makes the world a crueler and more abusive place not only by its direct acts of cruelty and abuse, but by the way it forces its targets to choose between (A) annihilation and (B) using extreme amounts of force to retain their sovereignty. The Guardian has published an open letter to Iran’s political prisoners, signed by Angela Davis, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Rashid Khalidi, Robin DG Kelley, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Judith Butler, Walden Bello, among others.

These are not people to be dismissed lightly. Several have given their lives to the anti-imperialist and Black liberation movements, and one of them is writing from inside a US prison. I take no pleasure in disagreeing with them. But the letter is wrong, and plays an objectively harmful role.

Its central image is the “two blades of a scissors”: the Islamic Republic on one side, US and Israeli imperialism on the other, with the Iranian people crushed between them. It inserts a symmetry between the world’s major imperialist power and an anti-imperialist state that has never invaded another country, and which has stood consistently with the oppressed from Palestine to South Africa to Venezuela.

The load-bearing phrase is this: “we reject the false binary of imperialism and hollow anti-imperialism.” Exactly how “hollow” is Tehran’s anti-imperialism? 😵‍💫

For four decades, while almost every Arab government made its accommodation with Washington and Tel Aviv, Iran armed, funded and sustained the Palestinian resistance. It refused normalisation when the Abraham Accords put enormous inducements on the table. It has absorbed forty years of sanctions, assassinations of scientists, sabotaged infrastructure, and now an open war of aggression, rather than abandon that position.

The states that normalised are not being bombed. Hollow anti-imperialism is a communiqué and a hashtag. Iran’s anti-imperialism has been measured in the blood of 168 Minab schoolgirls, in the bombing of its hospitals and oil depots.

One can vehemently disagree with aspects of Iran’s domestic politics, but the question at hand is: where do we stand in the global struggle against imperialism? What side of the barricade are we on? Do we support a criminal war of aggression waged by the US and Israel, or we we support the resistance to that war? Do we support genocide in Gaza, or do we support the country that has been the Palestinian resistance’s most consistent ally for decades?

This letter dissolves the distinction entirely. It asks us to refuse the choice. But in a war of aggression there is no third position available, because only one party benefits from your neutrality – and it’s not the party being bombed.

The letter appears in a British newspaper, six months into a US-Israeli war, at the precise moment when Washington cannot win militarily and needs the political terrain softened. It recycles a familiar vocabulary – sham trials, systematic torture, the targeting of minorities – without sourcing, in the genre that has preceded and accompanied every single regime-change war. Whatever the signatories intended, that is the function it will serve: making the moral case for war.

Angela Davis was imprisoned by a state that told the world she was a terrorist. Mumia Abu-Jamal is imprisoned by that state today. These are people who know exactly what happens when an empire manufactures the moral case for crushing its enemies. They would not have signed, half a century ago, a letter denouncing both blades of the scissors – COINTELPRO on one side and the Black Panther Party on the other.

Progressive and anti-war forces have a duty to support Iran against war, sanctions, regime change plots and destabilisation.

How have you successfully managed to avoid conversion to a radical political worldview despite everything you are seeing right in front of your eyes?"

Because to the rest of us, that shit looks like a goddamn magic trick. It looks like a superhuman feat of willpower to continue believing everything's basically okay and our leaders will sort this all out for us if we just vote for the correct plutocratic meat puppet in the next election. You're just chilling out while everything burns, like that Buddhist monk sitting calmly in meditation after setting himself on fire. How are you even doing that?

Life in the 2020s comes with so much dissonance and dysphoria because everyone knows this civilization is doomed, but it’s not being acknowledged by any of our mainstream institutions.

We can all see everything getting worse and worse before our eyes in real time, but our government officials don’t talk about it. Our mass media outlets don’t report on it. Our education systems don’t recognize it. There’s a giant elephant in the room with us at all times, and normal people are acutely aware of it, but the talking heads keep speaking as though everything’s going to keep ticking along normally into the foreseeable future.

We can all see the summers heating up.

We can all see that there are fewer insects and less wildlife around than when we were young.

We can all see that the western empire is on borrowed time.

We can all see that younger generations are having much more difficulty affording housing and life expenses than their parents and grandparents.

We can all see that technology has stagnated as capitalism’s innovation-for-profit model hits the limit of how far it can carry us as a species.

We can all see the apps, search engines, social media platforms and tech services getting shittier and shittier year by year.

We can all see AI making everything worse and turning everyone into cognitive infants who can’t do anything for themselves while consistently failing to deliver what its proponents say it will deliver.

We can all see the people around us getting dumber, crazier and more miserable as we are pushed into dystopian conditions where everyone gets more and more alienated and must pay a monthly fee for the experience of connection.

We can all see that state authoritarianism is escalating in proportion to public discontent with the status quo.

We all know we’re in a completely unsustainable situation. We all know we are riding a bus with disintegrating wheels.

But it doesn’t get acknowledged by anyone at the top. The news reports are still about the latest celebrity gossip and whether the economy arrow is pointing up or down. The movies and shows are still about wacky and witty characters for whom capitalism is working perfectly fine. The politicians are still talking about culture war issues and the Evil Dictator of the Day.

It is taken as a given that our grandchildren will be living in more or less the same kind of world we are living in, when we all know there’s no way this is true.

The wheels on the bus are coming off, boys and girls. The ride is near its end.

I’m not saying we’re all going to die, I’m just saying this civilization as it presently exists cannot possibly be sustained. Immensely drastic changes are coming up around the bend whether we like it or not, either by a deliberate transformation or by some cataclysmic event occurring against our will.

Life in the 2020s feels so spiritually dissonant because we all know this is the case, but all the sources we’ve been trained to look to for information and context are acting like everything’s perfectly fine. They’re painting a cheery picture over reality while every normal person is staring at the giant black cracks that keep appearing in the paint job.

Which tells you all you need to know about the competency of the people who are steering the bus. The people in charge are just going to keep driving this thing into the ground until there’s nothing left to save. If there’s going to be a world-saving revolution, it’s going to come from we ordinary people who are willing to acknowledge reality, not from the oligarchs and empire managers presently steering things who have been blinded by the pursuit of profit and power.

We either find some way to get their hands off the steering wheel and take control, or we find ourselves confronting the future horrors they’ve been discouraging us from thinking about while they drive us to our doom.

Soon thereafter in early 2026, Israel approves a ONE BILLION DOLLAR hasbara budget to push their narrative across a multitude of platforms, influencers, media outlets, advertising, films, etc.

March & April 2026, the NYT reports a sharp rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric, abuse, and crimes, especially across the south from the previous year. The rise was not accompanied by any recent event that would provoke such a trend.

In the same week (what a conicidence) in July 2026, two deranged men—one in New York, the other in Paris—stab bystanders minding their own business and reporting hints that they're crimes driven by Islam.

Vile, racist, slurs and imagery directly against the Muslim mayor of New York rise sharply, with the WSJ posting a photo worthy of the grandest Grand Wizard.

None of this is a coincidence. Israel and their zio tentacles in the US saw their only way out of the truth is to vilify, demonize, and dehumanize Muslims (more than they already do) to divert attention from the genocide they're conducting. If you want to help the western empire administer war propaganda, one of the best ways to do this is to pretend the violence of empire-targeted governments happens in a vacuum, completely divorced from western imperial agendas.

Pretend the protesters killed in Iran had nothing whatsoever to do with the known US-Israeli agendas to foment violence in that country and arm insurgent factions in order to topple Tehran.

Pretend Putin's invasion of Ukraine had nothing whatsoever to do with NATO amassing a proxy force on Russia's border in ways the United States would never tolerate on its own border.

Pretend Beijing's crackdown in Xinjiang had nothing at all to do with the west's obvious desire to balkanize China with the help of Uighur separatists.

Pretend the "authoritarian" measures we've seen in nations like North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela happened completely separately from the western empire's efforts to infiltrate, subvert and take over those countries.

Frame the US and its allies as mere passive witnesses to these dynamics, and the occasional revelation of CIA ops and State Department shenanigans as mere unrelated coincidences.

Frame the use of force by empire-targeted governments as the reason for the empire's efforts to topple them, rather than as the product of those efforts.

There is a reason why all the empire's enemies are willing to exert force to remain in power, and it's not because Washington is leading an alliance of virtuous democracy-loving angels in a fight against tyranny and oppression. It's because the US-centralized empire is the most tyrannical power structure on earth, and the only ones able to resist its agendas of total planetary domination are the ones who are willing to use force to thwart its efforts.

Israeli forces raided at least nine homes overnight and arrested eleven people, including a father and son together (Wadi al-Far'a, Tubas) and a 16-year-old (Adham Abu Srour, Dawha), without charge. A 55-year-old activist was separately arrested without charge at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Israeli forces demolished two residential structures in Bab al-Shams village (East Jerusalem area) belonging to two brothers — the third demolition of their homes within a single year.

Israeli gunboats fired on a Palestinian fishing boat off Gaza for roughly two and a half hours overnight.

Checkpoints and closures were imposed in Jericho, Bethlehem, Hebron, and Nablus.

Israeli forces raided Aida refugee camp, Bethlehem, blew open the doors of the camp's People's Committee office, and damaged nearby homes in the process — Palestinians officials called it part of a "terror campaign" against the camp. (PCHR, 1–7 Oct 2020)

20-year-old Fadi Osama Hejazi, died from sniper wounds sustained months earlier at Great March of Return protests (PCHR, 3–9 Oct 2019)

Israeli forces raided at least nine homes overnight across Bethlehem (al-Duheisha camp, Wad Ma'ali), Ramallah (al-Mazra'ah al-Gharbiyah), Jenin ('Anza village), Tulkarm ('Atil village), and Salfit (Hares village, two homes), arresting at least 12 people.

Israeli forces raided and ransacked the Hanthala Cultural Centre in Safa village (a heritage/youth-skills organization), breaking its main door and confiscating files.

Israeli forces guarding the Apartheid wall shot two Palestinian men near Zeta and Tulkarm while they attempted to cross into Israel for work.

Settlers from the Yitzhar settlement cut down 36 olive trees overnight in Burin village (Nablus). Later that morning, settlers from the same settlement attacked Burin's mixed school under military protection, forcing the administration to evacuate students.

In order to prevent Palestinians from leaving their homes during Jewish holiday, Israel began a full closure of the Tunnel, 300, al-Jeeb, and Hizma checkpoints (separating Jerusalem from Bethlehem and nearby areas) for three days during Yom Kippur, alongside closures of Arab village/neighborhood entrances with iron barriers and cement blocks, preventing anyone from accessing school, work, or medical facilities during that time.

Israeli forces raided homes in Jenin, Beit Ummer (Hebron), and al-Jalazoun refugee camp (Ramallah), arresting at least eight people; in Jalazoun, soldiers also confiscated 2,500 shekels (~$700) in cash from one household during the raid. (PCHR, 4–10 Oct 2018)

Israeli forces raided homes and a shop in Beit Led (Tulkarm), confiscating surveillance camera recordings, and arrested a 47-year-old man along with his 19-year-old son without charge.

Israeli forces arrested without charge a 44-year-old man, Naser al-Jundi, at a checkpoint set up at the entrance to Al Fawwar refugee camp, south of Hebron.

Israeli gunboats twice opened fire on Palestinian fishing boats off Beit Lahia and al-Sudaniya (northern Gaza), chasing them; no injuries or damage reported.

Israeli forces stationed along the Gaza perimeter fence near Umm al-Nasser Bedouin village opened sporadic fire and fired flare bombs into the border area, terrorizing residents.

Israeli forces conducted six additional home invasions without arrests in al-Samou', Bani Na'im, Sa'ir, and al-Jalajel (Hebron) and Bedia and Masha (Salfit).

Temporary military checkpoints were set up at Halhoul and al-Dahiriya (Hebron), four locations around Qalqiliya, and three in Salfit, further restricting Palestinian movement. Israeli forces raided homes in Sabastiya (Nablus) and Nour al-Shams refugee camp (Tulkarm) overnight, arresting five people without charge.

Israeli forces entered al-Far'a refugee camp (Tubas); when young men gathered and threw stones, soldiers fired live rounds, hitting three civilians.

Israeli naval forces intercepted a fishing boat at sea, ordered the two fishermen (one a 17-year-old) to strip and swim to the gunboat, then detained them; one was released later that day, the other and the boat remained in custody.

Weekly Friday protests in Bil'in, Ni'lin, al-Nabi Saleh, and Kafr Qaddum were attacked with live fire, rubber bullets, tear gas, and sound bombs; in Bil'in, soldiers assaulted a farmer trying to reach his own field and confiscated his vehicle.

In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on young men gathered near the perimeter fence in solidarity with Jerusalem (Shuja'iya and al-Bureij), wounding two with live rounds.

Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian olive pickers from Yasouf village (Salfit) while they worked their land.

Dozens of settlers, escorted by Israeli forces, entered Ta'nak village (Jenin) to pray at a religious site; soldiers closed the village's main street to secure the visit, locking thousands of Palestinians in their homes.

Checkpoints went up on the Tarusah village road (west of Dura) and at Hebron's southern entrance (al-Fahes), further restricting Palestinian movement.

Hundreds of Bir Zeit University students and other civilians protested near a checkpoint and settlement outside al-Bireh; Israeli forces fired live ammunition, wounding ten (eight by live fire), while undercover Israeli units embedded in the crowd violently kidnapped three students — one shot in the leg, another shot in the head and left in serious condition.

Israeli forces raided homes across Hebron governorate overnight, kidnapping at least 16 people, including a 12-year-old (Amir Abu Romouz) and a 13-year-old (Nasim al-Teiti), in Hebron city, Dura, Halhoul, and Al Fawwar and Al Arroub refugee camps.

Israeli forces raided two homes in Nablus, arresting two men without charge.

Soldiers occupied an uninhabited home in Halhoul, raised an Israeli flag over it, and briefly operated a checkpoint from the site before withdrawing but continuing to occupy the house.

This was the seventh consecutive day Nablus remained under a full Israeli military cordon (imposed since October 1 as collective punishment), with the Huwwara, Jeet, al-Naqoura, and Deir Sharaf checkpoints all tightened, denying and delaying movement for residents.

America didn’t promote freedom.

It monopolized the right to define it and then systematically destroyed every attempt at real freedom that didn’t serve American interests.

Whenever a nation tried to use its own resources for its own people, it was called a threat to “freedom.”

Iran nationalized its oil to keep the wealth at home … destroyed.

There are two types of racism in the west: the kind that’s considered acceptable in polite liberal society, and the kind that’s widely frowned upon.

The acceptable type of racism is the kind which considers it fine and normal to drop bombs on Muslim families overseas. The kind which sees starvation sanctions as a minor issue whose pros and cons are assessed solely on the basis of whether they will be successful or unsuccessful in achieving regime change. The kind which views imperialist extraction from the global south as the natural order of the world, with centrists and progressives squabbling only about how evenly that plunder should be distributed among westerners.

The unacceptable type of racism is the kind which affects other westerners. The kind whose consequences western liberals have to see.

If a white woman calls the police on a black man minding his own business in the park, western liberals will send her viral on social media, and she will be unwelcome in polite society until the heat dies down. If a celebrity is caught on tape uttering an ethnic slur, they’ll be unpopular for a while, and will be considered a liability by sponsors and film studios. This is the wrong kind of racism.

That’s what you’re seeing whenever the western press completely ignores a dozen Palestinians getting killed by western-made munitions on the same day the entire news media focuses on some allegation of “antisemitism” with no material consequences other than some western Jews feeling emotionally upset. The former is the right kind of racism, while the latter is the wrong kind. One is seen as acceptable and normal, while the other is a horrifying abuse.

Western racism falls into two distinct categories because our entire civilization is built upon the polite kind, whereas the impolite kind is useful to the powerful only as a wedge issue to keep western populations divided against each other. Mainstream western politics is often just a culture war between one major party which embraces both the polite and impolite kinds of racism against another major party which only embraces the polite kind of racism, thereby ensuring that no political energy goes toward ending the polite kind of racism.

The polite kind of racism is much more important to the powerful in the 21st century, because it’s an absolutely foundational component to their rule rather than merely a useful tool. Without the imperialist extraction of labor and resources from the global south at extortionate prices, you wouldn’t see sprawling megacorporations turning millionaires into billionaires and trillionaires who then use their wealth to manipulate western politics to promote their own agendas. Without nonstop military expansionism and the abuses of the western intelligence cartel, the managers of the western empire could not dominate our planet.

That’s why every few years westerners get to vote on whether or not to advance the impolite kind of racism in their society, while the polite kind of racism never appears on the ballot. You’re allowed to vote on whether or not your government will become more abusive to immigrants and other marginalized members of your society, but you’re never allowed to vote on whether or not war, militarism and imperialist extraction will continue. This expression of racism (or white supremacism, or xenophobia, or western supremacism, or whatever you want to call it) is considered too important to be left to the will of the electorate.

And you see this reflected in the consciousness of the western mind. Even relatively aware westerners who would place themselves on the far left of the political spectrum will often spend a lot more energy on domestic issues than the abuses of the western war machine.

Earlier this month the discourse on Left Twitter revolved around whether or not it was a “privileged take” to say that people shouldn’t serve in the US military, the argument being that many US military personnel come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I saw a lot of US progressives who furiously disparage ICE agents and American cops falling all over themselves to defend those who enlist in the US war machine, which is quantifiably far more murderous and oppressive than domestic American law enforcement.

The only way to see things this way would be to view those who live in the global south as less human than people who live in the United States. That’s the only way it could possibly make sense in your mind to see the abuses of your country’s domestic police forces as worse than the demonstrably more egregious abuses of the US war machine. You’d have to view a school full of Iranian children being blown up by the US Navy as less worthy of attention and opposition than an American being beaten by a police officer in the United States. You’d have to assume those Iranian lives don’t matter.

And those are some of the more awake members of western society. Most westerners are a lot less conscious and compassionate than that.

Westerners live in the most savage and murderous civilization on earth. We don’t feel like we are savage and murderous because we outsource most of our violence and slavery to overseas operations, but that’s what we are. We go about our lives consuming products made by wage slaves under an oppression machine that is defended through constant mass military slaughter, and then we wag our fingers at a viral video of some schizophrenic saying racist things in order to feel nice feelings about ourselves. That’s what western life is, right there.

We’ve got a lot of growing up to do. We are in need of drastic, revolutionary change, more extensive than probably most of us can imagine at this point in time. We’ve got a long, long way to go, and a whole, whole lot of wrongs we need to make right around the world.
