Simple intervention that makes sense! STRATUS #RCT trial led by Dr @DebSiegal and @PHRIresearch in @JAMA_current reported that using small-volume tubes for 🩸 collection⬇️ RBC transfusion in ICU patients. ↔️ in insufficient specimens.

VTE patients with brain cancer have an increased risk for intracranial bleeding during anticoagulation
Another study by the #RIETEregistry team, leaded by Cecilia Becattini and Michela Giustozzi
New 2023 ACR/EULAR Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) Classification Criteria are out!
Patients need at least 3 points each from the clinical and lab domains (See below) to be classified as having APS. This will be very useful to clinicians :)

@LeaderAvi presents results from the ABC registry for AC with DOAC or LMWH in brain tumors.
- 🚫diff in rate of spontaneous (not caused by surgery) ICH between DOAC vs LMWH (but numerically ⬇️ with DOAC)

@husam247@DrToddLee@MarcCarrier1 Interesting thoughts well taken. In our study we treated starting anticoagulation as a competing risk (as well as death), and shortened FU for primary analysis to 12m . https://t.co/e3EL9kXT4a
LIVE NOW: @LeaderAvi#ISTH2023 SOA Address: Arterial thrombosis is ↑ in cancer & under-treated. Challenges in treatment include ↑ bleeding, drug-drug interactions & ↓ platelets. Cancer-specific #thrombosis management shown ⬇️ in #CoagCapsule. https://t.co/RDHs0PAQLq
Pts with cancer are at ⬆️ risk of ATE including IS 🧠
Cancer is a known cause of ESUS.
Tx of ESUS in cancer is not well defined.
Pts with cancer and ESUS have a ⬆️ risk of recurrent stroke with DOACs or ASA
Future RCTs are needed (and planned) to guide tx

Dr. @LeaderAvi providing a great overview of arterial thromboembolism (ATE) in patients with cancer. ATE are often neglected in CAT literature. ATE is common in new diagnosed patient and associates with higher mortality!
#ISTH2023
A Fib is common in patient with cancer. These patients are at higher risk if ATE but also at high risk of bleeding is also high. Good guidance are available to help clinicians #ISTH2023@LeaderAvi
Dr. @LeaderAvi presented the second phase of the ABC study which reported on the 65 patients with ICH on anticoagulation during the study. Majority of ICH are overt and intramural. VTE is frequent after ICH. No clear association between AC management and VTE post-ICH.

@NicoleKuderer@KSanfilippoMD@gary_lyman Thanks! Totally agree that bias is possible and this has to be taken together with other data. More research needed. Looking forward to discussing after the full abc presentation:
📣Publication alert: finally published in @TheLancet , the ALIFE2 trial. So thankful to all women who participated and all colleagues who joined the study. LMWH does NOT improve live birth in women with #thrombophilia and #recurrent miscarriage.

Pop-based cohort of atrial fib/flutter pts with CHA2DS2-VASc score 0-2 not receiving anticoagulation. Newly-diagnosed cancer associated with 2.7-fold ⬆️ in 12-month ATE risk (vs. no cancer). @JACCJournals https://t.co/e3EL9kXT4a #cvCoag#AFib#CardioOnc
If cerebral vein thrombosis (#CVT) fails to recanalise after 3-6 months, the risk of CVT recurrence is 8.8x higher. Suggests that anticoagulation length should vary depending on recanalisation status. Free PDF in @RPTHjournal.

Now in a large population-based cohort - pts w/ ALK+ #lungcancer at a significantly higher risk for #VTE vs nonALK #nsclc. Awareness is 🗝️! do we need +data or start using prphl💊?
