Good news for #melanoma cancer patients: New results from a personalized #cancervaccine designed to prevent melanoma from returning after surgery showed positive results, according to research presented at this year’s #ESMO26 meeting in Madrid.
The study found that adding a specially tailored cancer vaccine to standard treatment with immunotherapy successfully reduced the risk of melanoma coming back by 42% compared with standard immunotherapy alone.
“The idea of this treatment is that by specifically boosting a patient’s immune system to recognize their own tumor cells, we can reduce the risk that the cancer comes back,” says Dr. Michael Postow, Chief of the Melanoma Service at MSK. “Even when we can’t see any cancer on a CT or PET scan, we know that often it’s still there — because such a high proportion of patients eventually have a cancer recurrence. That’s why there is tremendous need for this type of treatment.”

A new vaccine continues to show potential as a ready-made treatment for pancreatic cancer, according to a study co-led by MSK researchers.
MSK's @EileenMOReilly presented phase 2 results from AMPLIFY-7P at #ESMO26. The vaccine targets KRAS mutations, which are found in more than 90% of pancreatic cancers.
99% of patients receiving the vaccine developed cancer-fighting immune T cells. Patients with the strongest immune responses had the lowest recurrence rates.
“Having a vaccine that’s ‘off-the-shelf’ would make it easier, faster, and less expensive to treat a larger number of patients,” says Dr. O’Reilly. “This gives hope for people with pancreatic cancer who have been out of effective treatments when their disease returns.” Learn more: https://t.co/gDpJRtWOQd

When the immune system is weakened by cancer treatment — especially by a stem cell or bone marrow transplant (BMT) for blood cancer — common viruses like herpes simplex virus (HSV) can become a serious problem.
For someone who is immunocompromised, an HSV infection can mean dealing with large, painful sores that resist the usual therapies and ultimately lead to more critical medical conditions.
The good news: The @FDA recently approved #pritelivir (Hovilpri) for HSV infection in immunocompromised patients, including those who are undergoing cancer treatment.
The study that resulted in the drug’s approval was co-led by Dr. @GenPapaMD, Clinical Director for Infectious Diseases at MSK, and Dr. June Lee, an infectious disease specialist at MSK, among others.

New research from MSK uncovers an unknown role for immune cells in fueling triple-negative breast cancer; identifies a new strategy for fighting leptomeningeal metastases; finds trastuzumab deruxtecan shows enhanced benefit for patients with ERBB2 mutations in breast cancer; and more: https://t.co/S0EwaRmTFO
🚨: The @FDA has granted accelerated approval to the immunotherapy Jemperli (dostarlimab) for adults with stage 2 or 3 rectal cancer whose tumors have specific genetic characteristics known as mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H).
The approach, developed at MSK by gastrointestinal medical oncologists Dr. Andrea Cercek (@AndreaCercek) and Dr. Luis Diaz Jr. (@ldiaz1971), uses immunotherapy alone to harness the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.
This allows some patients to skip standard treatment for rectal cancer, which includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and can have life-altering consequences for bowel and urinary function, as well as fertility.

Specialists at MSK know how to modify tests and treatment protocols to navigate the special needs of people who have cancer during pregnancy. Beyond the medical expertise, MSK also offers emotional support for expectant mothers facing a heartbreaking circumstance.
“We are seeing this situation more often because of the rise in certain cancers among younger people,” says MSK psychologist Dr. Amanda Balakirsky. “Being pregnant with cancer can cause a lot of grief and feelings of isolation. We try to normalize the experience as best we can, to help them adjust from what they were expecting in their pregnancy and feeling different from their peers.”
