Can we take a moment to recognize the PhDs and doctorates 🏆 earned prior to personal computers 🤯? Can you IMAGINE??!! @PhDVoice @PhD_Genie

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@verymessyjamie Both can progress straight through to an undergrad. If someone hasn’t got the A Level grades required or may not have appropriate subjects then a foundation course is an excellent entry route.

@Jessica_LDN 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 YES!!!!

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@KellMcRae Your expertise and knowledge will come overtime. Get to grips with all the orientation stuff. Having a good start on organisation will go a long way later down the line.

@academic_exit Understanding the transferability of your skills to different roles is pivotal!

Even if you don’t hit all the criteria or don’t have specific experience APPLY!

Skills gained during a PhD & the level at which you have implemented them cannot be learnt/attained over night.2/2

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@academic_exit I knew where I wanted to work so I looked at the skills I had gained & expertise (practical experience & understanding). Then I started looking at roles, with a very open mind, that related to what I was interested in/passionate about and the above skills were transferable to.1/2

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@PhDVoice @PostdocVoice Yes, a lot of universities have similar policies that inhibit PhDs from taking up full time positions until they complete (submit revisions, graduate…) or for a period of time after.

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@PhDVoice @PostdocVoice About a month specifically preparing BUT remember…

You’ve been working on this and have been immersed in your work for many years already.

The conferences, the presentations, the questions, the discussions, the publication process, review panels…

YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF!

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@academic_exit If you see a role, apply! Specific experience is not always more favourable.

The skills you gain and the level at which you have used them sometimes far outweigh experience in the field.

[Leanne Jaye @LeanneJaye]

@academic_exit No, I’m on my second role since leaving academia. Understanding how skills gained from my PhD could be transferred was pivotal when writing my application & in my roles. 1/2
