Hey friends! A reminder: if you're contacting me in my capacity as a convention staffer, please email me. My Twitter DMs don't provide the coverage and redundancy that my convention email addresses do, and don't feed into the workflows set up to get messages answered promptly.
I've been documenting this waistcoat build over on Mastodon (where I'm [email protected]). Here's a photo dump of converting shoulder darts to ease. https://t.co/bepngqCJ7v
@premeesaurus threads exist, but yeah, I miss the quoting feature. Folks still do it the way it was done here before twitter built it in--by copy/pasting the original or dropping a link--but the feature is useful.
I don't miss people QTing hateful bullshit, but that's not all it was for.
We're currently invite only because of capacity, but our sysadmins did some infrastructure improvements and tuning last week and the server has been pretty stable since
I'm LeeFlowerH on Instagram and [email protected] on mastodon. If you're looking for a wandering shop invite and we're mutuals here, DM me. Folks can follow each other across servers, but our "local" timeline is full of friendly SFF folks.
[CW Cancer] Hey writer-friends, Mishell Baker asked me to let y’all know that she would appreciate your prayers (if you’re the praying type), good vibes, and well-wishes. In about two hours, she has surgery to remove a bunch of cancer from her innards. 1/7
Further update from Mishell:
"I am home from surgery, but surgery was extensive, and I am in a rough part of recovery, mostly staying in bed. Friendly emails appreciated; it's nice to read about good things that are going on in others' lives, and to feel loved and appreciated."
The fussiest step of clay reclamation: when it's thick enough to pour the water off the top and not run when poured, I spread it out on centerboard sheets and let it firm up to workable. #Ceramics https://t.co/t8HxfeUUdL
@moppetron@seananmcguire The song pretty blatantly sympathizes with the narrator, and it might not be an endorsement of world domination but it is at least suggesting sympathy for being driven towards antisocial behavior - and absolutely nothing in the song humanizes or sympathizes with Laura
A recent Dr. Nerdlove article just reminded me of that time Jonathan Coulton wrote a sympathetic song about a boy sexually harassing a classmate and then fantasizing about taking over the world so he could rape her and folks treated it like a nerd anthem
@moppetron@seananmcguire Yeah skullcrusher mountain at least has going for it that's the rapist in the rape joke is not portrayed as the good guy
I'm not sure where folks are getting that read about The Future Soon though - it is not remotely sympathetic to Laura
@moshezadka the problem is it's meant to be sung and I am a less than talented vocalist, but I could probably find a good singer who'd be willing to do it (assuming it's any good)
Anyway I should log off before someone accuses me of trying to cancel Jonathan Coulton in the last days of twitter.
My actual point is if you're a dude who thinks women unfairly think you're a repulsive creep because of your hobbies...it's not because of your hobbies.
Years ago I wrote a parody of it from Laura's perspective, in which she fantasized about growing up to become a feminist hacker who could protect herself and others from stalker creeps like the narrator of the original; I think it's still on my hard drive somewhere
@akasha111182 @seananmcguire and then there's Skullcrusher Mountain, which, sure, the narrator is not meant to be sympathetic, but writing a song about that particular trope as if it's funny without any critical analysis sure is a choice.
@morgankbell Right? It was a lot of "the geek community is our haven of acceptance so how dare you not accept a whole fuckton of misogyny; not wanting to be sexually harassed is the same as bullying"
Still is really but at least we have the vocabulary now
@LeeFlower The 2000s were a weird time to be a lady-type nerd because, like, I finally felt like I was “allowed” to have nerdy interests without being bullied, but the community was so openly hostile to people like me in ways that I couldn’t even describe at the time
