COLD WAVE THOUGHTS: The socials are on fire with weather talk tonight. Severe cold, snow, rumors of snow, and more.
Just to summarize my position…
*Confidence is high in a very cold pattern for the eastern and southern U.S. in the January 7-20 time frame.
*Top two analogs that show up with this pattern are January 1977 and January 1985. Both featured extremely cold temperatures, even deep into Florida.
*How cold will it be in January 2025? Still too early for specific numbers. Remember, this outlook is based on pattern recognition. No skill in a specific forecast beyond 7-10 days.
*Will it snow? Maybe yes, maybe no. But the “players are on the field” for snow for parts of the Deep South at some point during the cold wave. The map attached to this post is the probability of one inch or snow or more (GFS ensemble) through January 15.
*It is all we can do to get a snow forecast correct one day in advance. Forget about it 10 days in advance.
Piles of new model data will roll in tonight, and I will have a new video briefing and discussion here early tomorrow morning.
@spann You’re the best at what you do my friend. As an AP Human geography teacher, I liked your social science reference. Need to get you out to Leeds. Rusty’s bbq on me.
