What countries are overrepresented in dev research? Using new database of published dev papers, a scatterplot of papers published vs. log extremely poor population (<PPP $2.15 in 2021); left-truncated for < 100K ppl. Curve captures proportional representation (given log scale)
@ElaineLiuEcon Interesting set of responses. I also lean toward a lot, but we also know that much of the text in many letters has been more or less copy and paste, right? Not obvious why AI use is meaningfully different
@otis_reid@DKThomp Now we have all the problems the article describes (overfull schedules, complex preferences, high transaction costs, low energy/time for the female organizer who is me) and don't seem to have solutions to any of them. But I guess I'm aware of it, at least!
@otis_reid@DKThomp Congrats on the age zero addition! I love more kids, but it has definitely had a deleterious effect on our social life (not that it was in such great shape before); my parents used to host friends a lot with 4 kids at home, and that honestly seems hard to imagine
@ryanbedwards@jt_kerwin@paulnovosad@JeffDenning This paper also is outstanding for documenting lack of informativeness of AEA registry entries

In terms of actual compliance, they do find around 95% in recent years but lower prior to abt 2022; and some seem to be post hoc registrations
@jt_kerwin Completely agree. It allows people to send a signal of research integrity that is often largely unearned
But I also think that editors' seeming low level of interest in enforcing any compliance with PAPS, if filed, is an important factor
@shreyaseedas I think it's reasonable to flag to the editor but as others have noted, it's very hard to anyone to distinguish btw actually using AI to do all the work; and using AI to just write up points (though I don't necessarily endorse that strategy either)
@viniciusccicero@DenisonU@ColoradoStateU with another increase when the trade is prohibited.
Plus WIP on inequality, resource booms, and much more - check out his work!

@viniciusccicero@DenisonU@ColoradoStateU And a fascinating WP currently under revision for JEEA explores creation of the donkey hide trade in Brazil driven by increase Chinese demand for traditional medicine; finds that conflict over property rights for free-roaming donkeys ⬆️ crime. .

A little peeved that with all my diligent investment of time I've apparently only watched two of the top ten
The wire and mad men

@etjernst@jrgptrs Oh absolutely. On a separate thread someone said the journal wanted to retract the paper but the publisher refused under legal threat (?) So that is not their responsibility; but regardless, I don't think journals should publish or take seriously these withdrawals
