What a country.

Young people are actively destroying the roads to unearth metal rods they can sell for quick cash.

The same people destroying the road today will wonder tomorrow when these actions make the road unsafe and end their lives or those of their loved ones.

Yet in the middle of all these, their state governors instead of addressing the poverty and unemployment that is driving this madness in behaviour of their youths, the government is funding mass marriages to produce even more children who will only grow up to participate in this current madness.

What a people. What a government.
A society of lunatics led by lunatics.

Nigeria has somehow turned a young woman calling Tony Elumelu “Tony” into a national debate on respect.

Tony reportedly preferred Mr Elumelu, Mr Tony or Chairman. That is his choice. But calling a man by his actual name is not an insult.

The real issue is Nigeria’s obsession with hierarchy.

Once a person becomes rich or powerful, their name is suddenly considered too ordinary.

We must add Chief, Chairman, Honourable, Doctor, Engineer, His Excellency and, if possible, enough titles to occupy half the conversation.

Sometimes the introduction is longer than the résumé.

This culture teaches ordinary people to shrink themselves in the presence of wealth. Respect becomes performance. The richer person must feel bigger, while everyone else must demonstrate that they know their place.

That is why the young woman’s simple “Tony” rattled so many people.

She did not insult him. She merely skipped the ceremony.

Then came the predictable attack on Gen Z: “They have no respect.”

Perhaps they simply have less appetite for worship.

This is a generation already carrying unemployment, expensive education, collapsing public services and, in many cases, the responsibility of supporting parents and siblings far too early.

After handing them that inheritance, we now want them to remember to say “Chairman Sir”.

Please. One crisis at a time.

Respect matters. Courtesy matters. But dignity must also matter.

Tony Elumelu travels the world and meets people in societies where powerful men are routinely called by their first names. The sky does not fall. Their bank accounts remain intact.

So respect Tony Elumelu. Admire his success. Learn from him.

But Tony is still Tony.

And calling him Tony should not require clearance from the Nigerian Council of Elders.

I am a Northern girl. But I am not the Northern girl you imagined.

When people hear “Northern Nigeria,” many immediately picture a Muslim Hausa woman.

That woman exists.

But so do I.

I am a Northern girl. I am Christian. I am not Hausa. I am Laka/Godogodo.

And sometimes explaining that feels like I am introducing myself three times before people finally understand where I come from.

The problem is that Northern Nigeria has been reduced to one religion, one language, one culture and one kind of woman.

But the North is not one people.

There are Christians. Traditionalists. Muslims. Indigenous ethnic groups. Minority languages. Women who wear hijab and women who don’t. Women who grew up in churches. Women who grew up in mosques. Women whose grandparents spoke languages most Nigerians have never even heard of.

We exist.

And I think one reason many people don’t know we exist is because we haven’t told our stories loudly enough.

So yes, I am a Northern girl.

Just not the version of Northern Nigeria you were taught to imagine.

This is a young medical doctor called Dr Innocent. He’s working as a house officer at the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Calabar, Cross River State.

Dr Innocent and his other doctor colleagues who are also house officers have NOT been paid for 290 days.

Yes you read that right.
A whole 290 days of working as a medical doctor with ZERO pay. That’s about 10 months work with NO pay.

According to Dr Innocent,
The Ministry of Defence has refused to pay their salaries for no reason. This young medical doctors are being worked like slaves while receiving ZERO pay.

They have nobody to speak for them.
They have nobody to fight for them.
They are suffering and dying in silence.
