How does a new PhD student look for research direction?
I’ve recently started my PhD but struggled to find a research direction. I looked and searched, this blog post is my forming understanding of visualization research:

Let me explain to you why you should change your design!
I am going to present our paper @VisLab_HKUST “Why Change My Design” at #ieeevis 2023 on 26 Oct (Thu) Morning!
@EuroVisConf@FILWD Presented at @EuroVisConf today!!
Slides are available here: https://t.co/JuqOkuOyrf
96 pages slide for all tags: https://t.co/laYgLNtDVi

Some excerpts from the presentation slides today:
Thank #eurovis2022 for the opportunity to share our work on visualization misinformation! Here are the messages we want you to know!
1. Broaden our discussion
2. Know the design constraints
3. Discover the potential threats

Look at those amazing student volunteers at @EuroVisConf - thanks for being such a great, thoughtful and helpful team! Now I can happily end my SV chair career 👴🏻 #eurovis2022
@lisacrost@sdbernard@Datawrapper Discretizing a continuous variable would produce some cases that two values are close to each other but one at the upper bound of a class and another at the lower bound of the other class. When plotted on a graph or map, the color difference becomes misleading.
@FILWD Hadley Wickham’s paper has constructed examples that people cannot tell whether the underlying data have real pattern or not. “How do we know if what we see is really there?” https://t.co/pcADIO8naq
@FILWD The simple case of counting how long each speaker is speaking is doable, but further analysis on the streams (audio/video) is tricky. Hope zoom opens up the api *conditionally*, i.e. under user consent.
@FILWD Our group seminars have the same pain point. And we have a project aiming to improve the facilitation of our zoom meetings, including monitoring breakout rooms.
Does it require technical knowledge to conduct these research studies? What advantages does my technical background give me? Where will my career go? What’s my competitive advantage when I graduate?

The frustration starts with the shifting interest in visualization research, more and more “psychology” studies, and the fading of design studies. As a student with a computer science background, I am confused, what’s the technical part of this type of research?
As a reminder: VIS full paper abstracts are /NOT/ due today. We have extended the abstract deadline to April 20th, with a final paper deadline of April 30th. #ieeevis
@arvindsatya1 I am TAing the vis course at #hkust and holding "remote" lab session every week with https://t.co/mB9Wahc0f0
Very happy to share how it's done!
