HKUST AI System Delivers Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis
A research team at HKUST, led by Prof. CHEN Hao, has launched SmartPath, an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to significantly enhance the entire pathology workflow in cancer care. SmartPath provides integrated support for clinical diagnosis, subtyping, biomarker quantification, treatment response assessment, and prognostic follow-up across a wide spectrum of cancers, aiming to accelerate turnaround times and enhance the personalization of treatment plans.
Developed from one of the largest and most diverse pathology datasets, SmartPath enables healthcare professionals with over 100 distinct clinical tasks. It notably diagnoses Hong Kong’s most prevalent cancers, such as lung, breast, colorectal, and gastric, with over 95% accuracy using a unified pathology foundation model.
🎤Prof. Chen Hao: “We are currently working with over a dozen top-tier hospitals in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, which has been fundamental to its rigorous validation. SmartPath isn't a static tool; it's a continuously evolving system that grows smarter with every clinical application, truly paving the way for a new standard in intelligent, personalized medicine.”
The HKUST research team is now focused on expanding SmartPath’s capabilities to include additional cancer types, with an emphasis on developing more targeted therapeutic strategies and improved patient stratification.

Benchmarking gLMs across the central dogma of bio:
Genomic Touchstone: 34 genomic LMs, 36 tasks, 88 datasets spanning DNA → RNA → protein
I was kinda shocked to see models trained only on DNA can predict RNA mods & protein features better* than RNA/Protein LMs🤔
