Sergeant Richard Robert Obert was from Modesto, California. He served in the United States Army with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Division Support Command, Americal Division.

His MOS was Band Member.

Army bands served throughout Vietnam, performing at military ceremonies, changes of command, memorial services, concerts, and other official events that helped maintain morale for troops serving far from home. But wearing the Army uniform—even as a musician—did not shield a soldier from the dangers of a combat zone.

Sergeant Obert arrived in Vietnam on May 14, 1968.

On July 27, 1968, just over two months into his tour, he was reported missing in Quang Tin Province. Official records classify his death as non-hostile, with the cause listed as drowning/suffocation.

He was only 23 years old.

His passing was not the result of a famous battle or a well-known operation. Like so many losses during the Vietnam War, it was a tragedy that occurred while faithfully serving his country.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial makes no distinction between infantrymen, pilots, medics, mechanics, truck drivers, cooks, clerks, engineers, or musicians. Every name carved into that black granite represents an American who answered the call to serve and paid the ultimate price.

Today, we remember Sergeant Richard Robert Obert of Modesto, California.
