Is Volkswagen potentially closing down their Eastern Cape manufacturing plant and exiting South Africa?

In short, no they are not leaving #SouthAfrica. However, the concerns voiced by the CEO should be taken seriously. The CEO of VW (Thomas Schäfer) has highlighted the following challenges as reasons that make #business in SA uncompetitive for them: continuous blackouts, rising labour costs, railway and harbour collapse.

Some quick facts about the Volkswagen #manufacturing plant in South Africa:

🚗 Number of people employed: 3580
🚗 Amount of cars produced per day in the plant: 710
🚗 Investment made by VW into this plant to date: over R6.1 billion
🚗 At this plant, they manufacture: engines, Polo Vivo, Polo and they are the sole manufacturer of the Polo GTI01

VW is the largest private employer in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro - their plant employs over 3500 people. Besides creating jobs in South Africa, this plant supplies VW cars to South Africans locally as well as to international markets through exports.

Its a sad day seeing this CEO voice his concerns over the challenges of doing business in SA and the lack of government intervention. VW would not be the first bluechip company to pull out of SA and they certainly won’t be the last with the current crisis that our country is experiencing. We cannot afford to lose 35 jobs let alone 3580.

So far as the automotive industry goes, it is a disgrace that Ford and BMW have had to go ahead and invest billions while still waiting on Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) to publish their automotive green paper on NEVs. While car companies continue to wait for these regulations, companies like VW are vocalising their impatience for government action. This lack of urgency is dangerously short-sighted behaviour by the department.

As us hopeful South Africans continue to do time and again, here’s hoping for a miracle.
