German occupied Poland was not like most of occupied Europe. Germany did not intend merely to control the country or exploit it for the duration of the war. Its long term goal was to destroy the Polish state, eliminate the nation’s leadership, suppress Polish culture, seize Polish land, reduce millions to forced labor, and eventually remove, Germanize, or destroy the population.

Poland never accepted German rule. It never formed a national collaborationist government, and the Polish state continued fighting from 1939 until 1945 through the government in exile, its armed forces abroad, and the Polish Underground State.

The Home Army became one of the largest resistance movements in occupied Europe. Poles fought with weapons, gathered intelligence, published underground newspapers, taught children in secret, protected archives, churches, books, and works of art, and kept alive the institutions of a nation the occupiers intended to erase.

They did this while facing street roundups, public executions, concentration camps, deportations, forced labor, the murder of hostages, and collective punishment against families and entire villages.

Polish resistance was also shaped by hatred and fear of both occupiers. Germany invaded from the west, while the Soviet Union invaded from the east. Poles experienced German terror, but they also remembered Soviet deportations, executions, prisons, and the Katyn massacre. For many, the war was not simply a struggle against one invader, but a fight for survival between two totalitarian powers that had divided Poland between them.

The overwhelming Polish attitude toward both German and Soviet domination was rejection. Poles did not want to become German subjects, and they did not want their country absorbed into the Soviet system.

Resistance was not only carrying a rifle. It was teaching a child Polish history, hiding a soldier, printing a newspaper, preserving a book, refusing to betray a neighbor, or continuing to believe that Poland would live again.

In occupied Poland, preserving the nation itself became an act of defiance.
