@LibDems team for #NHS, Health and Social care - supporting our spokesperson @libdemdaisy | DMs open for official journalists seeking #healthspokesperson
❗️ 57% of nurses surveyed are either thinking about leaving their job or actively planning to leave.
❗️ Nurses are exhausted, undervalued, and can not give the level of care to their patients they would like.
The findings show nursing staff routinely working unpaid overtime, delaying or not taking annual leave and feeling exhausted. Respondents also expressed a growing sense of disillusionment after 18 months’ fighting the pandemic.
Just to be clear:
Before Omicron we had:
~6k Hospitalised Covid Patients
~600 new admissions per day
And we were not coping!
Now we have:
~14k Hospitalised Covid Patients
~1,800 new admissions per day
~ 100k less staff
And This Government has decided to do…nothing. Right?
🧵 If ever proof was needed that the Government is asleep at the wheel with this staff shortage crisis, the Vaccine Minister's non-answers this morning just about sum it up. /1
❗️ Govt ignored warnings of Covid testing shortages.
❗️ Problem could have been avoided with better planning.
❗️ Pharmacies leader raised issue with @UKHSA in early December & asked for a plan but they never answered the question.

“On a night shift last wk people were waiting for 9 hrs plus for ambulances & I waited 3 hrs to offload my patient to hospital. Hospitals are seriously strained with no beds,”
Chaos unleashed on #NHS is likely to be worse in about two week’s time.

"Our children have been failed again and again throughout this pandemic by Boris Johnson’s government."
“From air purifiers to rolling out the vaccine to teenagers, this Government has dragged its feet.

The government has promised 7,000 HEPA filtration units to schools. There are 24,000 schools. Assume 14 classrooms on average. Two units are required per classroom. That is 672,000. So the government is meeting 1% of need. This policy works only as a measure of incompetence.
Vaccines Minister Maggie Throup on @SkyNews doesn’t have a clue how many Briton’s are in self isolation or how many NHS trusts have declared critical incidents. What is this Government basing its planning on??
Problem:
mass infection -> staff/student sickness -> educational disruption
Response:
stop contact tracing in schools
mandate attendance for children living with cases
combine classes (staff shortages)
Result:
mass infection -> staff/student sickness -> educational disruption
Heart attack & stroke treatment is time critical.
Treatments such as clot-busters have short windows for a therapeutic affect.
Long delays for an ambulance to arrive & then sit in a queue outside A&E means many will not get the treatment they deserve.

❗️ The @conservatives govt. has failed to protect the health of the people of this country, the NHS, and the economy.
❗️A triple whammy of fails that is building a legacy of long term illness, huge NHS waiting lists & a mountain of debt.
❗️"Countries which tolerated high transmission have seen rises in.... mortality, healthcare worker shortages, & repeated lockdowns to control surges in case numbers."
✅"Countries which suppressed transmission early saw reduced mortality & less economic damage."

❗️The impact of govt. mismanagement of pandemic on the mental health of NHS staff is massive.
❗️One Clinic saw 5,000 NHS staff in its 1st 10 yrs, & is now seeing 650-700 staff per month.
❗️Demand has doubled in the last last year.

This is a very concerning development on top of what was already a crisis. I’ve requested a briefing as soon as possible, and will be keeping up the pressure on @sajidjavid to provide emergency funding for our ambulance service, and a short-term emergency strategy to save lives.
There are nowhere near enough lateral flow tests for Covid-19 in England to allow the government’s policy of their indiscriminate use. Access to tests must be prioritised and clear guidance given on their use. My article for The Guardian. https://t.co/IIR5k9hFil
