Here’s the thing about comparing priests lives in this day and age to those of the Saints:
It’s absolutely insane. Seriously.
At core what constitutes a Saint is something that transcends time and practical considerations.
The expression of that changes radically from age to age.
So, when someone tells a parish priest that he needs to love God like St. John Vianney did, they are absolutely right.
When they tell a priest that his schedule should be like St. John’s, they are absolutely and ridiculously wrong.
About 10 years ago, I was talking to a retiring Priest. He was 90 years old and he had been a priest since he was 26.
He told me that the expectations, obligations and schedule of a pastor now would have been undoable to him when he was first made a pastor. The further stated his opinion that about 80% of the Priest, his age could never have been a pastor in today’s world.
99% of the people who have an opinion on this have never been a priest and never will be. They don’t know the pressure, they don’t know the schedule. They don’t even have a fraction of a sense of what is required of us.
I don’t say this complaining at all, I assure you I’m quite happy.
What I’m asking people to consider is that when they criticize priests for not offering enough confessions or for whatever the current anger at Priest is about, don’t tell them what Saint Francis DeSales did, because he lived in a totally different age.
I assume God’s people have a right to demand a priest who striving for holiness.
I do not assume they have a right to tell the priest what faithfulness and holiness look like in today’s age by comparing them to the schedules of priests in the past.
