I remember thinking last year that this was one of the most chilling letters I’d ever read. It treats freedom of speech as merely one factor to be weighed in the balance against “detrimental effects on civic discourse and public security.” And the letter was targeted specifically at a conversation on this very platform between @elonmusk, an American, and @realDonaldTrump, also an American then running for the US Presidency. When the letter talks about “content that may incite violence, hate and racism in conjunction with major political—or societal—events around the world” in this context, it’s talking about core political speech. More than any other document I’ve ever read, this letter bares the fangs of the global censorship-industrial complex and underscores that unelected bureaucrats in the EU are ready, willing, and able to use their regulatory reach to try to influence elections and nullify the First Amendment in the US. When I wrote earlier this month about the glaring inconsistency between US relations with the EU and NATO, this is exactly what I had in mind. If the sovereign nations of Europe allow the EU to attack fundamental freedoms in the US, those same nations cannot expect the US to defend fundamental freedoms in Europe.

We lost last night. Full stop.

I’m not interested in sugarcoating it, making excuses, or listening to another round of political consultants or pundits explain away failure. Again, full stop!

In the military, when you lose ground, you don’t stand around congratulating yourself for a job well done. You figure out what went wrong, who was responsible, and what needs to change.

Washington could use a serious lesson in that kind of leadership.

For too long, Americans have listened to promises about accountability, government reform, fiscal responsibility, secure elections, and defending our constitutional freedoms.

Enough promises. Where are the results?

The American people deserve answers, not another fundraising email. Not another carefully scripted press conference. Not another politician telling us to wait until the next election.

The next two years cannot be business as usual.

We must examine why we lost. Where was the organization? Where was the leadership? Where was the follow-through? If we cannot answer those questions, we have learned absolutely nothing.

I spent more than 33 years serving this nation in uniform. One lesson never changed: failure without accountability guarantees more failure.

Our children and grandchildren will inherit the consequences of what we do, or fail to do, over the next two years.

NO MORE EXCUSES. NO MORE EMPTY PROMISES. ACCOUNTABILITY STARTS NOW.

The Paycheck Protection Program was created to save American jobs, not to enrich those who aren’t eligible for taxpayer-funded relief, especially the wife of a U.S. Senator.

Strand Book Store, owned by Nancy Bass Wyden, wife of U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, received $932,350 in second draw PPP funds despite a federal law barring businesses controlled by a member of Congress or their spouse from receiving those loans.

Our Fraud and Asset Recovery Division will expose this abuse, pursue those who exploit taxpayer dollars, and hold them accountable. No one gets a pass when it comes to defrauding the American taxpayer.
