the way people romanticize these scenes is so perfectly ironic and on brand with the movie’s message about the feminine shadow. make no mistake, this story is a cautionary tale against the divine feminine becoming trapped in the male gaze. it’s quite literally about a woman’s slow descent into madness as she makes herself less than human in the pursue of validation.

the entire love witch persona relies on elaine no longer presenting herself as a human being with needs/flaws/vulnerabilities, all in the name of embodying an archetype of male desire. she spends most of the movie believing that doing so will get her to be loved by men, and that this love will both save and heal her. she isn’t tapped into her actual divine power, she is operating from lack and suppressing her feminine rage. her identity becomes a role she must maintain, and so she starts losing her goddamn mind.

her personhood becomes so enlaced with the performance and the need for male validation, it puts her in a state of delusion that has her killing the men who disrupt that very fantasy. violence becomes her transmutator, her decompression mechanism, a vehicle for her rage. the men couldn’t make her feel any less empty because masculine validation will not fill your vessel as a divine feminine — it will corrupt it. the message here is that performance will psychologically fracture you and entrap your soul, not that you should aspire to be the embodiment of said male fantasy. when you suppress your darker emotions, they will erupt very destructively.
