Nigeria had 93,469,008 registered voters for the 2023 general election, yet only 24,965,218 votes were cast. That means millions of registered voters stayed away from the polls.

I support Omoyele Sowore @sowore because I see important differences between his political message and the established political establishment. Sowore has consistently campaigned around accountability, anti-corruption, restructuring, stronger institutions and reducing the influence of money in politics.

The major political figures Nigerians should examine include:

These politicians have different political records, platforms and controversies. What makes Sowore different, in my view, is his long-running emphasis on challenging corruption and entrenched political power, rather than presenting himself simply as another member of the established political class.

But ultimately, Nigerians must make their own informed decision.

If you believe in Sowore, don't just post his picture online. Talk to your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and community members. Encourage people to register, collect their PVCs, understand the candidates and participate peacefully in the election.

Like Adunni Like Chef T, The Bullying Never Stops

I have been avoiding this Adunni matter since yesterday, but there are so many layers to it. The primary issue here is the constant bullying and outward hatred people display the moment they discover you are a Muslim.

Were we not all here during the Chef T saga? We saw the intense bullying she faced. Many of the people acting surprised or offended right now are raging hypocrites.

Do not get it twisted. The entertainment industry, particularly Yorubahood, is heavily populated by Muslims. But you have to look at her specific situation. Her fame, her core audience, and her professional circles have always been heavily concentrated around non-Muslims.

When she rediscovered herself, coming out to accept it openly in that kind of environment was always going to be hard.

So if she says people bullied her, I believe it. The comment section alone is a testament to that.

To Adunni, you are welcome. There is no shaking. Whatever God wants to give you, no human being can take it away from you. Just remain steadfast in your religion.

And mind you, covering your body is a mandatory part of Islam. A Muslim must not imitate the lifestyle of non-Muslims. A Muslim woman is commanded to protect her modesty, and this is particularly crucial for a super beautiful woman like you.

My best advice to you right now is to find a grounded scholar. You need a trusted teacher you can easily ask questions whenever things are not clear, so you do not have to navigate your faith through public opinion.

I’ve been thinking about the experiences shared by journalist Zainab Bala, actress Adunni Ade and popular food blogger ChefT, about publicly identifying as Muslim and the reactions that followed.

It also reminded me of an experience I had about two years ago.

I missed an opportunity. I was never told it was because of my hijab, but deep down, I suspected it was part of it.

I wasn’t bothered.

My response to stereotypes against Muslim women in hijab has always been: keep growing.

Keep learning. Keep training. Keep becoming so good at what you do that your work speaks for you.

If one organisation says NO, another may open its doors. I can testify to that. 😊

Sometimes a woman has to take more steps to access the same opportunity, and as a Muslim woman in hijab, perhaps even more.

That is why professional growth cannot be treated casually.

Interestingly, I’ve also accessed opportunities because of my veil.

Personally, I avoid discussing politics and religion because they are sensitive and narratives can easily be twisted. The aspect of religion I’m comfortable discussing publicly is knowledge-sharing.

But one thing is certain: we will keep showing up as Muslimahs, in our veils and modest fashion, and keep striving for excellence.

If you block one path, our Rabb will surely open a better one. 🤍
