Theology 101:
“Hey, Svigel, why aren’t you engaging in these anti-Calvinist or anti-Arminian debates?”
Me: Seven reasons:
1) I’m a Calvinist, but not that kind of Calvinist.
2) Polarization and tribalism lead to reductionism and mischaracterization, and I want no part of that.
3) For the same reason I don’t try to break up two rabid dogs fighting. I don’t want to get bit.
4) My theological identity and security doesn’t require me to be right and everyone else to be wrong. People disagreeing with me doesn’t bother me.
5) I consider anything but Pelagianism condemned at Ephesus in 431 to be within the fence of basic orthodox Christianity, even if I disagree with it.
6) I love the brethren, and that includes people with different views from mine, and I don’t believe issues like the nature of depravity and prevenient grace and the order of regeneration versus faith are fundamentals to the gospel proclamation.
7) I actually do occasionally engage in these disputes, but I focus on ideas and try to be constructive, and others who are engaging in this matter properly are doing so better than I could anyway.
