Bungalu is a survivor!

Small, skeletal, and totally alone, he had been spotted several times, but only for a moment before hiding away. On 27th February, we mobilised a rescue with the KWS – but just before our helicopter arrived, he zigzagged past everyone on the ground and vanished.

Two days later, following a monumental storm, two local Maasai men found and secured the calf - it was a miracle to find him still alive. We raced to the scene and flew him to our Kaluku Unit.

There we discovered another twist in Bungalu’s story: He had deep claw marks laced across his back. The wounds had scarred over, but he had clearly been pursued by lions.

Bungalu was a hard-won case. He was skin-and-bones, riddled with ulcers and parasites. For weeks, he remained in fight-or-flight mode, barely sleeping as he rocked in his stable. But despite all he’d been through, Bungalu embraced his Keepers from the outset. He was visibly relieved to be part of a family again.

Badgers are often the forgotten victims of fox hunting, an illegal activity that is supported by Nigel Farage and his Reform party, and now they are encouraging a cull of badgers in Wales, despite there being no scientific evidence that this is effective in dealing with bovine TB.

A vote for Reform is a vote to eradicate wildlife.

There is no logic to their demand to slaughter badgers. In fact, Labour MP Vikki Howells has said in response to this ludicrous proposal: "There is simply no scientific consensus that the culling of badgers is effective in dealing with bovine TB."

It seems that Reform will do anything they can to persecute wildlife, whether it be supporting fox hunting or campaigning to kill badgers for absolutely no reason. Their policies are uneducated and built on propaganda.

A renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard , Bill was invariably funny and occasionally furious . He loved birds and loathed those who harmed them . He was delightfully unpredictable , sparky , smart and at times a bit spiky . Critically he really knew his stuff , and his passion was true - he didn’t just pick up his binoculars on telly , he went birding whenever he could . So he was genuine and that’s why we loved him , he never needed a script , and took scant interest in any he was given . He didn’t like rules and often neglected to play by them . This may have frustrated the serious and the worthy but it always amused his audience - he was an utter joy to be with . I recall finding a Black Woodpecker in a damp Dutch park with him once , he gazed at it intently , sighed , put down his bins , turned to me and just smiled . A massive grin . No words , just a beautiful childlike bliss . That says all you need to know about Bill Oddie .

Even the planet's most resilient desert survivors have started succumbing to extreme heat. Experts say it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen.

For centuries, camels have been celebrated as the ultimate 'ships of the desert,' renowned for their ability to thrive in arid environments too harsh for almost any other livestock. However, an escalating climate crisis in North Africa and the Horn of Africa is pushing these evolutionary marvels past their biological limits.

In regions like Ethiopia's scorching Afar desert, where summer temperatures frequently exceed 50°C (122°F), herders are witnessing unprecedented levels of suffering among their herds. Ali Umer, a veteran local camel herder, recently reported losing eight calves in a single month to the unrelenting heat.

He described a horrifying reality where the animals suffer from blistered feet and watery eyes, and the sand itself becomes so intensely hot that it burns their skin and singes their hair as they rest.

This crisis is not an isolated tragedy; it represents a systemic threat to the ecological and economic stability of communities that rely on camels for transport, milk, and meat. North and East Africa are home to approximately 80% of the world's dromedary camel population, and as traditional grazing areas dry up, pastoralist families are facing catastrophic losses.

Scientists and animal welfare experts warn that prolonged temperatures above the camels' comfort threshold compromise their immune systems, leaving them highly vulnerable to dehydration, disease, and death. With even the hardiest desert species struggling to survive, researchers are urging immediate interventions, such as strategic water distribution and emergency veterinary care, to prevent a total collapse of the region's agricultural backbone.
