I bought some watches in America three weeks ago, but the belts were loose on my hands.
So today I went to a watchmaker at Sam Levy’s Village to get the belts adjusted.
As I walked into the shop, a young girl was sitting at reception with a young boy who was playing with his phone.
I assumed correctly that they were the watchmaker’s kids.
I requested to see the watchmaker, the young girl asked what it is that I needed done.
I told her that I needed the belts adjusted, she calmly said it costs US$5 per watch.
Where is the watchmaker I asked, I am the watchmaker today she responded with confidence.
I hesitantly gave her the first watch, she measured my wrist and she got down to work.
She sat down on the work station and adjusted the belts, she is only 15 years old.
She started fixing watches when she was in Grade 7 (12 years old), she told me.
If you teach your kids your trade, they can earn some money when need be, it reminded me of the importance of teaching someone how to fish, instead of giving them fish daily.
One day you won’t be there to give them fish and they won’t know what to do it.
This kid told me that she wants to be a professional watchmaker when she finishes school.
Why not when she already fixes watched already at 15, in a normal environment Government would catch these kids when they are young through vocational training for school kids.
I hasten to say political parties can also provide spaces for training like what the EFF does in South Africa uplifting kids especially from poor backgrounds.
This kid could end up as a watchmaker in Switzerland, it starts with society allowing her to follow her dream by providing a conducive environment.
Her brother was just watching as she did her work, it shows that if girls are taught a trade, they can do it too just like boys.
My initial hesitancy was caused by our societal bias, I thought Tapiwa's brother would be the one to do the job instead of her, I was wrong.
As I left I jokingly asked her brother if he was the receptionist, he got the message.
Give them business if you want your watch fixed, they are at Sam Levy close in the block opposite TV Sales and Hire.
Just ask where the watchmaker's shop is.
