We Love AI… Until a Business Puts It in Front of Us

My friend posted something on his status:

“Why should I be chatting with an AI when I’m trying to reach a business? Make the actual person answer me.”

I read it and just sat down.

Because that statement is not strange. It is very Nigerian. Very African. And it is more common than we like to admit.

We use AI when it is under our control.
We use it for research.
We use it to improve our writing and skills.
We use it to check symptoms and understand medical information.
Some people use it as emotional support when life is heavy.
Some even use it as a quiet companion when they don’t want to disturb anybody.

All of that is acceptable.

But the day a business puts an AI in front of us, the energy changes.
Suddenly it feels like disrespect.
Suddenly we start saying “I want human person.”

You already know the feeling.
Those random calls from numbers starting with "020".
You pick up. A voice starts talking about a loan product, an insurance product, or some new offer. After a few seconds you realise it is not a human being. It is AI. Many of our call centres have already moved in this direction.

AI as a customer service agent is useful. It is available 24/7. It does not get tired. It can handle volume that would overwhelm any human team. On paper, conversion should improve. But the feedback from the other side of the phone tells a different story. A lot of people cut the call the moment they sense it is not a real person. Some feel the company is not taking them seriously. Some simply say “I don’t want to talk to this robot kini.” The same quiet resistance shows up again.

This is not just preference.
This is training.

Our culture and environment taught us that respect equals human presence.
The person who answers is the one who “sees” us.
The one who replies with tone, pause, and feeling is the one who is present.
So when an AI shows up, even if it is faster, clearer, and available at any hour, a part of us still feels short-changed.

I have been watching this pattern closely while building Reerac (https://t.co/Ft2hAvYHbA).

Reerac is an AI Recruitment platform built for African teams. Unlike Zara of Micro1 or Ezra AI, Nova our AI agent, runs conversational interviews with natural African voice.

What we keep seeing from the interactions is interesting.
The large majority of candidates start with curiosity and settle into the conversation. The voice sounds human, the flow feels natural, and many complete the interview comfortably. A smaller number still show that quiet preference for a real human after a while. You can sense it in the feedback. But overall, the acceptance is clear and growing.

That mix of reactions is what made me write this.

Our culture has shaped how we define respect, presence, and value.
The question is whether that definition is still serving us, or whether it is now limiting how fast we can move.

I am not saying we should throw away human connection.
I am saying we need to be honest about the parts of our mentality that reject useful tools simply because they don’t come with a human face.

This is the conversation I want us to have.
