I've noticed that of late, FMCGs produced locally are cheaper and of better quality than imported varieties.

Also, I'm noticing that makers of toiletries like shower gels, t/pastes, body lotions etc who had closed shop have either come back full force or licence manufacturing

The Lake Baringo-Bogoria Basin is experiencing a sustained hydrological shift driven by climate variability, prolonged above-average rainfall and catchment degradation.
The resulting rise in lake levels has become one of the most significant environmental and humanitarian challenges facing the Central Rift.

Since 2010, Lake Baringo has expanded by 119.08 km² and Lake Bogoria by 10.90 km², permanently inundating approximately 130 km² of land. The cumulative impact of recurrent flooding has displaced households, destroyed homes, schools and health facilities, submerged hotels, and disrupted livelihoods dependent on fishing, farming and tourism.

Scientific analysis attributes the rising lake levels primarily to prolonged rainfall and climate variability. A marked shift in the hydrological regime occurred around 2009, with mean annual rainfall across the Baringo and Bogoria catchments increasing by 30% between 2010 and 2020, and exceeding long-term averages by more than 50% after 2018. Catchment degradation and changes in land use have compounded the situation through severe soil erosion, increased sedimentation and reduced effective lake storage capacity, as well as heightened surface runoff that accelerates the conversion of rainfall into flooding.

I convened the First Consultative Meeting on the Status and Progress of the Basin to consider the emerging challenges and agree on coordinated action.
During the meeting, we considered a joint humanitarian and hydrological decision brief on the Rising Waters of the Central Rift. With a high possibility of El Niño conditions between October and December this year, projections indicate that further flooding could intensify the impacts across the basin.

We assessed ongoing interventions and committed to sustainable measures, including enhanced early warning and evacuation planning, shoreline protection and drainage works, resilient resettlement of affected households, restoration of degraded catchments, and protection of the basin's unique ecosystems and Ramsar sites. The Government's focus is to protect lives and livelihoods, restore affected communities and ecosystems, strengthen climate resilience, and secure sustainable water management so that the basin remains safe, productive and resilient for present and future generations.

The session was attended by Principal Secretaries Eng. John Tanui (ICT and Digital Economy), Eng. Festus Ng'eno (Environment and Climate Change), and Ephantus Kimotho (Irrigation),the Natural Resources Secretariat and officers from Baringo County.

The entry into force of the Sovereign Wealth Act is one of the most consequential economic steps ever.

The law creates a ring fenced fund drawn from the proceeds of mineral and oil sales to cushion the country from internal and external economic shocks like the recent Iran crisis.
