Six o'clock in Donholm

The air smells like dust, diesel, and frying dough.

I am sitting in a car, staring at a crowd of 200 people.

They are packed on line like christian faithfuls were Moses to appear selling the orginal bible. Some carry all types of carries: Care four , Tuskys , plastic bowls..

On top of the line is a man selling triangular shaped mandazis out of a battered aluminium container. The fire is live. This is evening fast food the Nairobi way.

I was new to the area. I get curious are these people daft? A man passes me and I ask:

"Is there no one else selling mandazis here?"

"Around the corner," he said. "Ten other people are frying them."

"Are they different?"
"Same triangle."

"Are they cheaper?"
"Same ten bob."

"So why is everyone suffocating in this line?"

"Go around the corner," he shrugged. "You will be served instantly. Because absolutely nobody is buying from them"

Ten competitors offering the exact same product, for the exact same price, with zero waiting time.

And they were starving for customers.

Meanwhile, one man had a monopoly on the neighborhood's fast food appetite.

And why did he have all the customers for a similar product and same price?

If you guessed its not logic, you are right.

If you say it’s voodoo, you are absolutely right.

I spent years trying to figure out why that kind of queue existed.

The locals joked that the man used Kisii voodoo.

They were wrong about where it was sourced, but they were right about the magical aspect of the enterprise.

Because it is the exact same voodoo Safaricom used to swallow the Kenyan telco market whole.

The same voodoo Equity Bank used to make traditional banks look like expensive dinosaurs.

The same voodoo that turned a dead television channel into the only thing an entire nation watches at 7 PM.

And I was there.

To the untrained eye, it looks like a Greek god Athens miracle.

It isn’t.

For in every phenomenal we label a miracle there is an exact science behind it

Labeling( as all labeling usualy is ) is our brains judging what we don't understand.

What Reddit Just Told Us About Dolly Parton (And About Ourselves)

I asked a simple question yesterday: what was it about Dolly Parton that made her Reddit's favourite human?

I was not prepared for what came back.

Reddit is divided on almost everything. Politics, religion and is banana a true fruit ?The division is almost the point . But somewhere over the years, a loud consensus formed around Dolly Parton. Yes her music and her movies and her rhinestones were great . However the consensus was about her goodness.

I asked why and Here is what came back.

"She's the one person in the world that has never said a bad word about anyone and she made the world a better place."

"Her Imagination Library provided millions of FREE books for kids from birth to age 5. She was raised in abject poverty and worked hard to support those in need. She established scholarships. Provided disaster relief. Donated to medical research. I can't recall anyone saying a bad word about her in the press."

"She was REAL — humanity wise, if not necessarily physically. Generous, loving, talented, open, honest. She's in a very small and limited crew of people I'd want to represent humanity to space aliens. Dolly Parton, Fred Rogers, Keanu Reeves. It's a very short list."

"She had no hidden agenda, no pseudo personality for the cameras and something else at home. She freely admitted, with no apology, that her external appearance was applied — but affirmed she liked looking that way. No apologies, no side-stepping. Just Dolly. I want to briefly tell you something about the dead and current online trends:

When the founder of OnlyFans passed, I hopped on the threads. The opinion was undivided that he had made the world a nastier place( not in those words ) Those comments were raw ( its why I remembered them ).They made me uncomfortable, because my African heritage teaches you to respect the dead. Even in church we say rest in peace.

But then the thread turned and the full anger landed on Steve Jobs. This was because Jobs had also died of cancer and was also a tech creator. They were very angry that he had not taken his symptoms seriously earlier. They were angry because they wanted him still here ( Apple vs Porn)

That is legacy. And legacy is the only currency that survives you.

Back to Dolly.

The question is not what made Dolly Parton special.

The question the comments are really asking is what it would mean to live in a way that leaves people saying that about you. What it would mean to be Dolly in this World?

The capacity is already in you. You knew what good looked like when you saw it. That recognition did not come from nowhere.
