Day 9: Kerry Gold: Self-sacrifice in the Face of Adversity🐴
Today in our series, we share a story about how the bond between humans and animals can be stronger than any fear.
Scottish farmer Fiona Boyd found herself in a deadly trap on her own field. While trying to help a small calf, she provoked the mother’s fury.
The half-ton cow knocked the woman to the ground and began literally trampling her into the earth. Fiona curled up into a ball, realizing she had no chance of escaping on her own.
Help came from the one person they least expected.
A 15 year old mare named Kerry Gold, who had been peacefully grazing nearby, instantly assessed the situation. Seeing that her owner was in trouble, the horse galloped straight into the thick of the action.
Kerry wasn’t afraid of the enraged cow: she began kicking furiously, driving the attacking animal away and shielding Fiona with her body.
The horse literally “fought” for her owner, allowing her to crawl to the safety of the fence.
Fiona is certain: if it weren’t for Kerry, that day would have been her last.
This story reminds us that animals possess incredible empathy and are capable of self sacrifice for the sake of those they love.
