Dear friends, April was a month that finally saw the realization of a very important step for our sanctuary. We finally found the right way to be able to start sterilizing our female cats. As you know our male cats are all sterilized, but we could not sterilize the females for various reasons - but now we have started slowly. Since we had to welcome several pregnant or recently given birth mothers, we urgently need to implement our plan to carry out a sterilization campaign. We urgently need to purchase anesthesia, necessary medicines, and above all create the suitable space for the post-operative period. Can you help us? We are so excited and happy to be able to save the lives of our female cats, but we really need to ask for your help.
Our dream is to have a sanctuary with 100% healthy, vaccinated, well-nourished and sterilized cats.
The cost of an operation with anesthesia and medicine is estimated at around €15 for each cat.

In May 1796, Edward Jenner administered his vaccine against smallpox for the first time on James Phipps, the eight-year-old son of his gardener.

Smallpox is one of the deadliest and most contagious diseases known to man. The virus killed over half a billion people in the twentieth century alone—three times the number of deaths from all of the century’s wars combined. On 8 May 1980, the WHO announced the eradication of smallpox. This was an unprecedented event in history, signaling the first and only annihilation of a human disease.

The victory—which saved tens of millions of lives—fulfilled the lifelong dream the English physician, Edward Jenner. Jenner noticed that dairymaids who contracted cowpox never developed smallpox. Working from this, he developed a vaccine from cowpox. Indeed, the word “vaccination,” coined by Jenner in 1796, is derived from the Latin root vaccinus, meaning "of or from the cow.”

The prominent Scottish physician Sir Walter Farquhar advised Jenner that if he kept the nature of the vaccine a secret, it could yield as much as £100,000. But Jenner nurtured no such ambitions. In 1798, he had a hut built in his garden and christened it the TEMPLE OF VACCINIA. It not only became a beacon of hope for the poor who sought protection against smallpox, but it was also the site of the first public health service in Britain.

Nearly two centuries after Jenner’s first experiment, the disease that once scarred and terrorized the world had vanished. It remains one of the greatest triumphs in the history of medicine.

Our nightmares are back
Our neighbors have started attacking each other since this morning. We hoped that they were just words and verbal threats and that war would never come again, neither to us nor near us. Because when a war begins nearby, even if death and destruction do not affect us, the markets and borders are affected. For us now the nightmare of having to stock up on food returns because if these or those launch a few too many missiles, we cannot move and so this week we have to run to stock up on food and water. Can you help us? We wish all countries to have peace. Please only send words of support for animals and leave political sympathies far from here. Let's only think about how to feed our animals.
Our love and affection also goes to Charlotte and her friends in Kabul, we understand you very well and hope you are all well.
