The temple is believed to have been desecrated in the 12th century C.E. Some accounts date the site as far back as 2000 B.C, implying a continued occupation of the site for over 3000 years.

A giant pyramid temple was part of a 187 hectacre site of Ahichhatra (Bareilly) excavated in 1940. Ahichhatra finds mention in the Mahabharata as the capital of the Panchala empire. The massive pyramid temple even in its run down state measures 22m and has a huge Shv Ling on top.
