This is Ocho. Ocho lives in my bathroom and hangs out on my orchid plant.

Every day I soak a Q-Tip in water and put it down for him wherever he is (on the plant or behind the toilet or on the vanity) and he comes running over and gets a drink.

Was my first reaction to smash him? Nope.
To flush him down the toilet? Nope.
To “burn it to the ground”? Nope.

He’s literally a fraction of my size. I could easily kill him, but I choose to be kind.

He deserves to be on this earth as much as I do.
In fact, he contributes way more to the natural order of life on earth than I do.

It’s so easy to choose kindness.

I encourage everyone to take a moment and make sure the language you use when it comes to spiders, insects, rodents, etc. is kind and not fearful or disgusted.

None of these beings are "pests" or threatening.
They are here to provide a value to the ecosystem.

Let them be.
Help them if you can.
Be kind.

Bondi Sands Run Red With The Fallout From Hate

Sydney’s sun beat down—
Bondi alive with summer’s promise.
Laughter leapt from sandcastles,
Waves carried the shouts of children,
The first day of Chanukah,
Light kindling hope above picnic rugs.

Innocence shone on towels and skin,
Families gathered in the rhythm of seaside peace—
No whisper, no omen of how quickly
Trust can be shattered on an ordinary day.

Then: violence erupted.
A staccato of gunshots fractured the afternoon,
Sand stained with terror and grief,
Sirens wept as hate claimed the lives
Of fifteen innocents—
Dreams stolen in seconds, for nothing but blind fury.

And as chaos spread,
A different story took shape against the blood and noise—
Ahmed al Ahmed, hands steady, heart open,
Fruit-seller from Sutherland, just a man
Who chose courage over fear.

He saw the horror and ran toward it,
Unarmed, no shield but his resolve.
He faced a gunman.
Where others hid, Ahmed moved—
Wrestling hate to the ground,
He disarmed the killer,
Refused to let violence finish its sentence uninterrupted.

Elsewhere, a life saver dived into the surf,
Rescuing a soul from the sucking waves,
Hiding him until the chaos dulled,
But Ahmed’s stand blazed singular—
Stopping the gun, stopping the blood,
Meeting hate with unshaken hands and will.

Let’s not distract, let’s not diminish:
Ahmed al Ahmed—
An ordinary Australian on an extraordinary day,
Showed the world the true face of bravery.
Hero, not bystanders;
Not kin, not friend—human,
Answering mindless violence with meaning and defiance.

So much potential squandered in the service of hate,
Yet in the ashes, humanity rises:
A stand, a name, remembered in every grain of sand.
Bondi’s loss is written in grief,
But its hope is written in courage—

Changing the story

In New South Wales’ clay plains, scientists uncovered over 700 fossilized human footprints dating back more than 20,000 years in the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area.

Among them, a barefoot runner’s trail reveals astonishing speed estimated at 37 km/h (23 mph), rivaling today’s Olympic athletes. The stride length, depth, and angles indicate movement across soft clay, possibly during a hunt or fleeing danger.

Other prints belong to adults, children, and even a one-legged individual, highlighting both physical resilience and community support. These tracks provide the oldest known evidence of human presence in Australia, offering insight into migration, survival strategies, and the impressive athletic abilities of the First Australians during the Pleistocene era.

Have you noticed a new line of butter appearing on Woolworths shelves lately? Don’t be fooled, it’s not Australian. Woolworths has started stocking American-made butter, right alongside local brands.

To make matters worse, it’s wrapped in green and gold packaging, designed to look Australian. It’s a slap in the face to our hardworking dairy farmers who produce some of the best butter in the world. Instead, this imported product, pale, bland, and far from our standards, is being dressed up to mislead shoppers.

This kind of marketing doesn’t just undermine Australian dairy, it deceives consumers and cheapens our local industry. Australians deserve honesty on our supermarket shelves.

We’re calling on Woolworths to stop misleading customers and undercutting Australian farmers. Shoppers should be able to make informed choices, not be tricked by imported products disguised in Aussie colours. Support local. Support Australian dairy.
