Do not read Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey if you care about poetry.

She uses iambic pentameter (10 syllables) unlike Homer's dactylic hexameter (12 to 17 syllables), which means her text is often squeezed, lifeless, compressed and simplified. To maintain the rhythm, she strips away from the Odyssey. People tend to claim it is literal; that much is true, to the point of being reductive and devoid of deeper meaning, turning rhythm into mundane pastiche.

With the movie coming close, I advise future readers to choose a different translation.
