I'm hosting 2 free webinars for teachers in January. Teachers will deepen their understanding of why some students struggle with reading & learn realistic strategies that support struggling readers—without adding to teacher burnout. https://t.co/WtvoYM5haq

I've created a series of foundational skills support clips for parents with young children who are learning to read. I provide tips, strategies, and free resources to use at home. Please share with your school communities. https://t.co/iSMNIt5JCU
@Think_4_1nce @KJWinEducation What if the parents themselves don't know how to read? We can't make assumptions. Actually, part of the school's role is educating its community so that families can support their children at home.
@KJWinEducation All the adults in the school are responsible for making sure all kids read and write proficiently. If parents are able to support, that's great. But we can't hold them accountable for the school's failure.
@BenisonMrs So you think teachers using programs like Heggerty should only do the segmenting and blending parts and leave out the rest? To me that makes sense especially if they would devote that time to their phonics and spelling instruction.
Using a universal screener helps teachers gauge where children are at the beginning of the year. In this post, I share resources to support teachers in analyzing their screening data, organizing their groups and planning for small group instruction.

This! That's why teacher knowledge is crucial in making sure that phonics instruction is engaging and complementary of students' needs. No program will help children reach mastery without the guidance of a trained and knowledgeable teacher.
It’s been a rough start to the school year in NYC so I’m reposting this. It’s in the application where the learning sticks. I’m seeing lots of 40-min lessons where sts read and write less than 5 words. That doesn’t work. Implementing a flawed program w/ fidelity ensures failure.
As a new teacher, it's easy to become overwhelmed and consumed by everything happening if you don't take the time to set some boundaries from the start. Read my latest post with helpful tips for new teachers. #newteachers

Yes! Unfortunately, some school districts still think that purchasing fancy programs, with no support for teachers, will fix the problem. Unless we invest in building teacher capacity, those struggling 20% will continue to struggle.
Being serious about fixing the reading crisis will require a serious investment in supporting students on the bottom 20% including proving training, materials and coaching to special Ed teachers and other specialists.
All kids have the right to learn how to read. All means ALL
Vocabulary knowledge is 1 of the largest contributors to reading comprehension (RC). According to Stahl & Nagy(2006),vocabulary knowledge contributes 50-60% of the variance in RC. A consistent vocab instructional routine is a powerful tool every teacher needs in their tool box!
Teachers. Our greatest weapon in the fight to teach every child to read.
Universities need to ‘teach’ the teacher so EVERY child is taught to read.

Yes! When kids acquire the skills and they know how to read, they will naturally love reading and all the joy it promotes. They can't live reading when they're struggling to decode.
“Literacy Skills seem to fuel literacy enjoyment, rather than vice versa” (Bergen et al. 2022) It’s also important to note that “it seems it’s unidirectional as opposed to bidirectional skill-enjoyment.” #scienceofreading#evidencebased

@TheAaveMaria@teachforever54 As I often advise the coaches I work with, we can't give up & go with the flow. We have to keep empowering teachers with the knowledge so they can speak up & share learning every chance they get. There is power in knowledge & the relentless pursuit to promote change.
