@GoogleDeepMind has a long history of research with video games. We're gamers and many of us are former game devs. We have an immense respect for the craft and game developers.
Games are a safe testbed for embodied AI research and provide rich learning challenges for AI agents.
So you want to make a game engine.. I've made or used many across 30 years of game dev in many AAA studios and indie. Heres my advice for best engine practises.. 🧵

Amiga Power magazine's Win a Job at Bullfrog! competition challenged programmers to write a Space Invaders game within two months. The competition resulted in both @MikeDiskett (ace developer) and @demishassabis (DeepMind AI founder) working at Bullfrog.

My tl;dr for games people: RL agents can learn how to play small games in real-time. At least here this works on one type of game. Designing sth where you want an NPC to get better as a human watches / plays with them? This seems potentially in reach now.

@mmalex That was a Mucky Foot thing too! Ours evolved into an interactive system tray thingy called "Choke the Chicken", which showed everyone the global status of the chicken (choked/not choked). Prior to committing you'd choke it if it were free, then release it once done @tom_forsyth
