Having seen first-hand how badly "skilled" foreign nationals are treated by the visa authorities, I am surprised people persist with Europe.
And by skilled I mean invited professor level skilled.
There was a lovely puzzle in @skominers’ Bloomberg column last week. I particularly enjoyed the way it naturally suggests various harder problems, which it turns out can still be solved.
These wonderful books are on their way to the clever winners of our latest maths competition, generously sponsored by @SLSingh. Congratulations to Chris R, Mary-Jane M, Thomas R., Hannah D. and Brad P.! @LivMathsSchool@LivMathsSoc @livunimaths
It's been pointed out that the news cycle being what it is, 24 hours from now is probably too late. So we need to do this now.
I suggest we go for the current majority, share stories, and tag them: #RIPJohnConway ...
Please re-tweet for coverage ... thanks.
John Horton Conway has died.
Sigh.
One of the most unique mathematicians and human beings who ever lived.
Five years ago he was game for this April Fool's prank

For four years those in and advising government have repeatedly told the public that uninformed instinct trumps expert advice; that evidence you find uncomfortable is a hoax by the metropolitan elite; that your neighbour is your enemy, not your friend.

A handy back-of-envelope technique: To work out how long it will take for the number of cases to double, use the Rule of 72*.
E.g. Italy cases are growing at about 13% per day. So Italy cases will double in 72/13 ≈ 5 days.
* It should really be the Rule of 69.3.
Repeat: CANCELLATION of LivMS events:
The University of Liverpool has made the decision to postpone or cancel all of the University’s public events until the end of April due to the COVID-19 situation.
As a result, all Liverpool Mathematical Society events have been postponed.
Could you see yourself playing a key role in establishing a school for exceptionally able sixth form students studying Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science and preparing to take elite STEM degrees? https://t.co/XLfqaLaqD1

This entire thread is worth reading ... the maths is fascinating, the implications are worrying, although with appropriate precautions we can prevent the potential disaster.
Growth:
🦠In an outbreak of an infectious disease it is important to know the #number of cases and the #rate at which the number of cases is changing
🦠If the number of cases is in fact doubling and this doubling time stays constant, then the outbreak is spreading exponentially
