Why do people with Crohn's and Colitis flare?
This is the fundamental question we set out to answer when we started the PREdiCCt study in 2016.
On Tuesday, the first major results will be published in @Gut_BMJ
We wanted to look beyond just the clinical data. We focused on the environment: diet, lifestyle, exercise, sleep, and stress. By combining these factors with the microbiome and genetics, we aimed to understand the true drivers of disease activity over time.
This has been a decade in the making.
We recruited 2,629 patients across 49 adult and pediatric sites before the pandemic halted recruitment in March 2020. Since then, our team has been busy assimilating years of follow up data. Most participants have now been followed for over four years.
In this video, I talk through the background and design of the study. It represents a massive collective effort from clinical trials units, statisticians, and project managers.
Most importantly, it represents the dedication of the people living with IBD who gave their time to this research. Our goal is to provide the evidence needed to help patients stay in deep remission and to help clinical teams provide better, more personalized care.
I look forward to sharing the findings with you this week.

Phosphatidylethanol (PEth), a direct marker of alcohol consumption (3-4 weeks), are transforming objective measures of alcohol consumption. Check out latest data on its prognostic performance @AGA_Gastro https://t.co/iMdJFO3gRF
#ICYMI AST surveyed more than 10,000 transplant recipients, and the findings have been published.
These insights will guide conversations with leaders in healthcare and government to create positive change.

Would you deny a therapy that increases 7-year survival from 13% to 64% ?
If not, considering accepting EARLY liver TRANSPLANT for patients with Alcohol-related hepatitis.
Great talk by Alexandre Louvet.

Everybody talks about using the biomarker PEth to detect alcohol intake. But it's costly: $100-300.
Instead, start doing a good motivational interviewing with the patient following the RULE method. It takes time and empathy, but it's much cheaper.

Why two people that drink the same amount of alcohol, one develops cirrhosis and the other does not?
In the GenomALC Consortium, we found 20 genetic variants that influence susceptibility to cirrhosis.

Great interview on a complex problem of fatty liver disease with our own Julia W @CLDT_NYC@ColumbiaMed@ColumbiaPsych. Nice shout out to #peth as the hemoglobin A1c of alcohol.
In this episode (#302) of The Drive, I speak with Julia Wattacheril, M.D., M.P.H. We delve deep into the complex world of liver health, and we explore prevention and treatment methods for liver disease and MAFLD.

@livingjeff@N0tAnthonyDavis@DKThomp@BevTchangMD Morality is a loaded word with meaning outside of neuroscience. Neuroscience doesn’t deal with good and bad but the meaning we overlay from society on these internal psychological conflicts can be construed as good and bad. Overeating is still considered bad but not immoral.
Insightful questions and fun conversation with @DKThomp on obesity and anti obesity medications
Does our knowledge of #obesity biology drive #weightloss drug development? Or are the medicine’s success telling us that we’re getting closer to understanding obesity?
